For Sorrento hotels this is quite a shake-up! Sharp and revitalised style with a bit of luxury thrown in for good measure, this is a way to take a holiday with a bit more freedom – the 16 apartments in this “hotel-residence” as the Italians call it have everything you would want from a cutting edge hotel but in a format that will endear those who appreciate a little more liberty than a traditional lodging.

The apartments are rented on a weekly basis with prices reflecting the two possibilities of either 1 or 2 double bedrooms – in addition each of the apartments has a double sofa bed taking the apartments occupancy up to 4 persons and 6 respectively. Each has a private terrace with tables and chairs to make the most of the Mediterranean morning or an aperativo as dusk falls. Back on the inside, the décor is clean and calm to make the most of that wonderful light and create a space that is truly conducive to relaxation. The specially commissioned furniture includes wicker chairs, comfy sofas (which can be pulled out to make a double bed for extra guests or children) and a stylish kitchen corner in the living room so you can try a hand at recreating some of those delicious flavours for which Sorrento is famous – tomato and fresh buffalo mozzarella salad, scents of the lemons that grow on the terraces all around and, of course, some very tasty fish from the morning market.

Sorrento is a great little town and a wonderful base to explore the area. The Circumvesuviana train is very handy to travel round the bay towards Naples, with stations located at Pompei, Hercolaneum and close to the apartments themselves. The port is just a 5 minute ride in a bus or a 15 minute walk down the (steep!) hill. From there boats leave to the island of Capri and, in the summer, to Amalfi and Positano.

Sorrento, as a base for exploration, will always have the best location on the Amalfi peninsula because of its more convenient position in relation to the sites and towns around. The apartments may suit those who like to explore then but their proximity to the historic centre should make it easy too for anyone who enjoys shopping and pottering round the old quarter of this lovely little town. The apartments are managed by one of the more established and exclusive hotels in Sorrento meaning that for the discounted fee of 7 euros per day you can take advantage of the swimming pool (just 100 yards away) and the hotel’s private beach.

ll Activities
We’ve mentioned a few already and to be honest there is no shortage of things to do in Sorrento. The old quarter which begins just beyond Piazza Tasso (no more than a 10 minute walk from the hotel) is crammed full of shops in the very quaint alleyways and streets, offering an enormous variety from the traditional and classic (and pricey!) to the local produced craft goods such as the inlaid wood and the deceptively strong Limoncello – some would say an artwork in itself.

One of the best days out that we ever had from Sorrento was a trip to Pompeii in the morning followed by a drive up to the top of the volcano of Vesuvius in the afternoon. A twenty minute walk (fairly steep and not easy going underfoot but with absolutely stunning views across that expanse of sea to Capri as compensation) from the parking area leads you to the rim of the volcano.

Back in town, if you want to try some of the local Campania wines check out Bollicine in the old quarter at Via dell’Accademia, 9. Very cosy little wine bar with friendly staff who really know their wines.

ll Tips & Getting There
Naples airport (also known as Capodichino) is the closest at approximately 35 miles (52km) and well served by many low-cost carriers as well the BA, Air France, Iberia et al.

The Circumvesuviana train leaves Naples and works its way round the bay to arrive at Sorrento and if you don’t want to hire a care this is the best bet, a slightly more expensive option would be to take one of the many fast ferries that leave from the Naples’ port, Molo Beverello. Assuming you are not laden with very heavy bags both the port and the train station in Sorrento are within a short distance from the apartments. A taxi would be an easy solution from the port if you have bags.

If you have hired a car or have your own and approach from either the airport in Naples or Rome, take the A3/E45 motorway in the direction of Salerno for 18km. Leave the motorway at Castellamare di Stabia, following signs for Sorrento. This road, the SS145, continues for 21km until the town itself. Continue straight until you will arrive at a “dead-end” and the traffic indications force you to turn either left or right. Go right into Viale Nizza and the Rota Suites apartments are the corner, ahead and to the right.

Please feel free to send us your personal hotel review on this hotel. You may wonder why all the assessments we have on line are positive. Well, apart from the simple fact that we try to include only what we consider to be the best accommodations, there’s another important reason to bear in mind. Any hotel that receives 3 negative feedbacks is automatically taken out of our selection.
