A unique little hotel in Matera that has been carved out of the rocks

You are now in World Heritage country, for Matera is a UNESCO protected site. The town is renowned for its sassi - dwellings carved out from the rocks - and the hotel Sassi, as the name implies, is constructed in the same vein. Built in the 18th century and located near the town centre, it really is a magical town and this unique little hotel does Matera justice. Rooms have been hewn out of the soft stone to give a spectacular effect. It may look basic but all the amenities are there and they even come with beautiful tiled bathrooms. Each one may be different but all come with terraces and balconies from whence guests can take in the sights of the Romanesque cathedral and the Sasso Barisano. As a guest once said the whole place is beyond description, so please sit back and simply enjoy the photos, which in this case really do say more than a thousand words.

From Bari and from the airport of Palese - Bari

Take the exit Matera - Via Nazionale off the national roads SS 96 and SS 99; after take Via Nazionale towards the town centre; after three kilometers, near the public garden, follow the red signs "Hotel Sassi" and look at the map of the town centre.

From Metaponto - driving on the national road Basentana SS 407 - and from Potenza - Naples

Take the exit MATERA-CENTRO. After the hill, go straight on and follow the direction CENTRO - Via Aldo Moro. After the traffic lights follow the red sign "Hotel Sassi".For further details look at the map of the town centre.
