If the old saying "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" is true, then a stay at the Solar do Castelo should do wonders for the health. A fresh apple is placed on a tray every day outside each room for the disposal of guests. A nice quirky touch.
But the Solar do Castelo is much more than this. It is also about refinement and history. It started off life in the mid 18th century when a mansion was built within the walls of St. Jorge's Castle, on the site of what was formerly the Alcáçova Palace kitchens. For this reason it is still sometimes known as the "Kitchen Mansion".
Now, however, it has been turned into a smart new hotel decorated under the auspices of Graca Viterbo, one of Portugal's leading interior decorators. Care has obviously been take to preserve as much of the medieval remains, such as the cistern, which are thought to have formed part of some of the original Palace's outbuildings, whilst the inner courtyard and garden retain all their past glory.
Yet these elements of tradition go hand in hand with a feel that is up to date, modern and boutique. In fact, one of the many aces up the Solar do Castelo’s sleeve is that it has effortlessly incorporated these two seemingly contradictory elements – the old and the new - with great skill. Rooms are somewhat on the smallish side (quite often the case in historic locations), but that takes nothing away from the superb decor and romantic feel. This goes for all the accommodations whether you choose the standard or superior rooms.
A word of note, no cars are allowed in the castle walls and parking is very difficult in the vicinity. |

You should plan at least a couple of days to explore the rich variety of lisbons quarters (bairros) and attractions.
Alfama is the oldest part of Lisbon, going from the walls of the caste São Jorge down to the Tejo.
High above the city centre to the west of the Baixa is the so called Bairro Alto. This is the natural place to wind up at night. Well worth a morning or aftenoon stroll to explore.
The Baixa is Europe's first example of Neoclasssical design and urban planning. The lower town is very much the heart of the city and main shopping area.
Many of Lisbon's touristic attractions are located in Belém, amongst them are the Jerónimos Monastery, the Monument to the Discoveries, the Torre de Belém and Belém Cultural Centre (one of the centres of Europe for performing arts) which now houses the outstanding Berardo Museum of Modern Art.
The Parque das Nações, the former EXPO areal, is very much worth a visit. Also don't miss the famous Flea Market, Feira da Ladra, which fills the Campo de Santa Clara, at the eastern edge of Alfama on Tuesdays and Saturdays (7am-6pm).
Outside Lisbon there is a lot more to see:
Sintra, a world heritage site, has all the charm of a fairy tale town and was once described by Lord Byron as "the glorious Eden". Sintra has beautiful palaces old residences to visit, particularly the Palácio da Pena, Castelo dos Mouros, Convento dos Capuchos, Palácio da Vila and luxuriant gardens of Monserrate.
Estoril and Cascais can be reached within 30 minutes from Lisbon. Estoril was once known as the "Portuguese Rivieira" with grandiose villas and luxury hotels whereas Cascais was an old fishing village with pretty houses by the sea, is now a major resort. Both villages are connected by a beautiful promanade along the coast.
Serra da Arrábida, between Setúbal and Sesimbra is a peaceful nature reserve with its own microclimate that has created unique tree species. There are numerous animals, as well as excellent beaches to enjoy. On the way you can stop at Azeitão, a town renowned for its wines and cheese.
Costa da Caparica is a thoroughly Portuguese resort with restaurants and summer bars. Located south of Lisbon, getting there is by way of crossing the Tagus Bridge or a ferry boat and bus.
Praia do Guincho is beautiful beach and a superb spot for surfing and windsurfing. Located just outside Cascais ,a car is required to get there. |

| The Solar do Castelo ist located approx. 8 km from Lisbon airport within the castle walls of St. Jorge's castle, which is a historic zone and therefore reserved for pedestrian traffic only. Due to the narrow roads of Lisbon's historic city centre, the easiest way to get to the hotel is to take a taxi to Castelo Sao Jorge. If you come by taxi, you should ask the driver to take you to the security guard at the main entrance to the Castle, next to the Casa do Governador, where one of the hotel's staff will come to take you to the Solar do Castelo. If you arrive by car, you should come to the Largo do Menino de Deus entrance, where another security guard will tell you what to do. |
