This historical but re-designed Villa in Chianti provides a stylish retreat from everyday life in a typically Tuscan scene of rolling hills on the edge of a hamlet and within easy reach of Siena, Cortona and San Gimignano. Each of the 10 large rooms blend the traditional architecture of wooden beams and floors with a touch of modern elegance in the form of soft blues and creams in the décor, refined yet simple four poster beds in some of the rooms, more modernist versions in others. Clearly a talented designer has been at work and the finished result is a hotel that breathes style with relaxation and calm.

If you were to draw a triangle between Florence, Cortona and Siena, the Villa Sassolini would fall almost exactly in the centre. It provides an ideal base then to explore central Tuscany and the historic towns found there as well as the beautiful countryside and villages of Chianti and the Val d’Arno. The hotel has a swimming pool situated on a terrace bordered with lavender that looks out across the nearby hills with olive groves, vineyards and cypresses all in view. Its location away from any town of significant size makes this a place to escape to, a wonderful refuge from the toils and stresses of normal life. It is, quite simply, a very beautiful and stylish villa in Tuscany’s very beautiful landscape.

The nearest town is Montevarchi (10 mins), Italy's antiques capital, with an extensive antiques market on the fourth Sunday of every month, except July and August. Also nearby is Coltibuono Abbey, which offers wine-tasting and cookery courses. There are also several designer warehouse, including Prada, near Montevarchi.

Explore the medieval centre of Radda (20 mins), with its ruined fortification walls, its sculpted fountains, its armorial gateways, and its curving lanes leading to the Palazzo del Podesta

You're only 40km from Siena and 50km from Florence if you fancy going a little further afield for a day trip

Whether coming south from Florence or north from Rome, use the VALDARNO exit on the A1 autostrada. Follow directions for Montevarchi and continue into the centre of the town. Once there follow signs for Crossdromo and then on to Moncioni and up to the villa itself.
