ll Mallorca
The Balearic Islands – are important tourist resorts situated in the Mediterranean, midway between the Iberian Peninsula, the south of France and the north of Africa. Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza are the three main islands. Ibiza, the closest island to the Peninsula – together with its neighbour Formentera, are known as the Pitiusas or “Islas de Pinos” from the ancient Greek.
Tourism has provided the archipelago with a boom over the past 50 years due to its warm and pleasant climate all year round. There are beaches and tiny bays with crystalline transparent water everywhere.
The Balearics are one of the 17 self-governing autonomous regions of Spain. They have their own Parliament and three small Councils. The type of tourism is different in each island: Mallorca attracts the more cosmopolitan person, indeed people of a higher social standing – the King and Queen of Spain for example - spend their holidays in Mallorca; Ibiza is predominantly preferred for its nightlife; and Menorca is chosen by tourists who a more quiet approach.
ll History
Historically the Balearics can be considered as one. Because of their geographical strategic location - the Mediterranean sea-routes - these islands were important centres of trade. Piracy was brought to an end in the region when the Romans conquered Mallorca and established themselves there for six centuries. At the beginning of the 10th century, during the period of the Cordoba caliphs, the Vandals and Moslems came from the north but were considered the islands inopportune. Nevertheless, the Arab influence in agriculture and commerce, as well as the Roman influence on architecture, are quite evident.

ll Culture
The procession of the three Magi, in Palma de Mallorca takes place on the 5th of December
6th January - Fiesta of des foguerons, celebrated in Sa Pobla, Artà, Sòller and Muro. Includes fireworks and regional dances. The following day, there is a procession of coaches in Muro, and in Pollença a tree is erected at the square Plaza Vieja. People then try to climb to the top.
Carnival in Palma, during February, is a lively spectacle.
There are processions everywhere during Semana Santa, Easter week. Those in Sineu on Thursday and Friday are very beautiful.
Second Sunday of May - Celebration of the battle against the Saracens.
November - Feria of Inca is an original popular festival, celebrated on three Sundays. There are other Ferias in Santa María la Mayor and Dijous Bo.
31st December - Palma sees out the old year with the Fiesta del Estandarte, the «festival of the banner».

Monuments
Andraitx offers a fantastic view over the coast, as well as some interesting monuments: its church, Iglesia Parroquial, and the house palace of Son Mas. San Telmo is, without doubt, the most visited port at the island. Major attractions are its 16th century fortress and the ruins of the Sa Trapa Monastery nearby. It is also the starting point for trips to the beautiful island Isla Dragonera.

ll Gastronomy
The Balearics have a rich gastronomic heritage and each island provides its own subtle variation on a cuisine that may be considered Mediterranean.

Soups are very popular in Majorca, particularly clear soups, which may be from fish, stew or meat stock. Fish and seafood based dishes are very important, given they are in plentiful supply and of great quality along the coast. La caldereta de langosta (a lobster dish) is the most outstanding. Other typical dishes are rice with lobster and tuna with mayonnaise. In fact, mayonnaise was probably invented in Menorca. Fish dishes also predominate In Ibiza. Of note is la burrida de ratjada, boiled skate seasoned with ground almonds, Ibiza lobster with squid and el guisat de marisc, a tasty stew made with a variety of fish and seafood. The cheese from Mahón is also outstanding. Only Majorca produces wine, but Menorca produces gin whilst Ibiza has a very strong herb liqueur that should be watered down with ice.

ll Activities
Going to the Bay of Palma from the port to El Arenal is an ideal bicycle excursion. Though just 16 km, it goes all the along the seaside and you will see outstanding beaches such as El Portixol, El Molinar, and Coll d'En Rebassa, before arriving to the final destination. The historical centre of Alaior (Menorca), with its narrow lanes, whitewashed walls and manor houses of the 17th and 18th century is certainly worth visiting. The surrounding area provides some very interesting prehistoric remains such as the taula and talayot of Torralba, and the settlement of Torre d'en Gaumés. Mergeformatinet (Ibiza) is particularly interesting for a quite unique historical remain - the Cueva des Cuieram caves with a Carthaginian temple inside.
San Francisco Javier, a concentration of white houses built around a fortified church, is in the interior Formentera.
Needless to say, the islands provide excellent facilities for water based sports such as sailing and surfing.
