| Marche (pronounced Lay Markay), is undoubtedly one of the best kept secrets of Italy and to leave out this region on your travels would be a real pity. Boasting fewer tourists, traffic and packed restaurants than its more renowned neighbours (Tuscany and Umbria), it nevertheless has many of the glorious attributes that make central Italy such a fascinating place. In truth, it is not unusual to hear visitors say that Marche reminds visitors of what Tuscany used to be like many years back. Geographically, it is a mountainous and hilly region and as it gives way to the Adriatic Sea, narrow valleys, deep gorges and numerous rushing, sometimes inaccessible, streams (Gorge of Furlo, for example) come to view. These wonderful vistas of the Adriatic combine with picturesque settlements, castles and temples to make a beautiful coastline and rich history. Not to be missed if at all possible. |

Marches reached its highest artistic peak during the Renaissance, thanks to the presence of very important local artists, such as Raphael and Bramante. In visit Ancona the National Museum of the Marches, with an interesting local archaeological collection; the Diocesan Museum of the Cathedral, which houses interesting medieval relics; important pictorial works (Titian, Lotto) in the Pinacoteca Civica. The Civic Museums display paintings, ceramics of the famous Renaissance “botteghe” (art workshops) and archaeological relics. In Urbino, the National Gallery of the Marches holds the most important collection of the Marchigiana art (Raphael, Tiziano, Piero della Francesca); in the Museo del Duomo “Albani”, fourteenth-century frescoes, paintings, ceramics and sacred relics can be admired; the native house of Raphael is interesting and deserves a visit.
