The archipelago of the Canary Islands is made up of seven islands – Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Tenerife, La Palma, Gomera and Hierro, as well as other tiny islands. They are a thousand kilometres from the Peninsula and only 115 from Africa. They are volcanic in origin and their landscapes are evidently very different to European or African landscapes. The Canaries have been named as the Fortunate Islands – because of the weather – it is spring all year round, with an average temperature of 22ºC. It has more than eight million visitors per year – mainly German and British – 50% of which return for the second time. The water temperature along its 1.500 kilometres coast is not as warm as could be expected because of the Golf current that flows from north to south. Tenerife – the largest island – is mountainous; indeed the peak of Pico del Teide (3.718 m.) is also the highest altitude in Spain. La Gomera is one of the seven islands of the Canaries and situated close to the northwest coast of Africa, off the former Western Sahara. It is made up of volcanic structure formed by the accumulation of rocks originated in multiple eruptions. |

Volcanic development started more than 20 million years ago, the oldest mountain ranges of Tenerife came up from the Atlantic much later (about 8 to 12 million years ago). As for more recent history, the Guanches are thought to be the first to inhabit the region. They were tall fair skinned people, living on the slopes, or in small groups with houses built in circles. In 1496 and after much fighting in which Guanche values and nobility were evident, they incorporated into Spain. La Gomera is thought to be named after Gomer, a grandson of Noah, though notwithstanding this biblical reference, the island really only came onto the scene after Columbus stopped over in 1492, on his way to the new world. Here he abundantly provisioned his ships with foodstuffs, water etc leaving the bay on the 6th of September 1492 to discover America. Since then, the people of Gomera have called their island the Isla Colombina, the Colomban island, in reference to his visit. The Tower of Conde, the church of La Asunción, where members of the expedition and their mission were blessed, still exist. Later, other Europeans stop off here too, to load their ships with food, slaves, precious metals, silks and other goods. If we consider the influence of the Moors and the black African population as well, we can see the peculiar cosmopolitan characteristics and the wide mix of local people in the present day. |

Fiestas Important fiestas include Nuestra Señora de Candelaria (August 15th), and Corpus Christi, which takes place on the last days of May or beginning of June. The folklore of La Gomera has something which is exclusive to the archipelago: the dance of the drum: ancestral singing and dancing, unique in the hispanic world, because of its archaic combination of the singings of the romances (ballads) with dancing in the opposing lines.
Handicrafts The handicraft of La Gomera is diverse and functional. Amongst the most notable is the pottery crafted in the traditional manner, without the use of a potter's wheel, an art handed down from the times of the aboriginal people. The traditional loom must also be mentioned, on which beautiful rag rugs, bedspreads, blankets, carpets and saddlebags are woven from strips of old cloths and cotton threads.
Monuments La Laguna, the former capital, is the historic and university city par excellence of the Canaries. Its historic centre assembles a number of stately homes from the 17th and 18th century and concentrates the most notable religious architecture in the archipelago. The mansions of Corregidor, Lercaro, Salazar and Nava, as well as the Cathedral and the Church of La Concepción, are good examples of this important artistic legacy. Three towns in the northern part of Tenerife are famous for their local colour and historic value, La Orotava, in the valley of the same name, is a beautiful town in the middle of a sea of banana. Icod de los Vinos, a wine-growing centre that created the famous malvasía (Malmsey) wine, houses in its attractive historic quarter the island’s oldest dragon tree, symbol of Tenerife. Garachico, built on land that a river of lava recaptured from the sea, is a picturesque town of cobblestone streets and handsome white buildings. The history of La Gomera is forever linked to the discovery of America and the Conde Tower, built in 1449, and the Casa de Colón and Casa de la Aduana are testimonies to its proud history. A brief journey through the most important towns of La Gomera will lead in the south to the small fishing port of Playa de Santiago; in the west to the curious town of Chipude, to the foot of the impressive natural monument of La Fortaleza, and to the picturesque villages of Agulo and Hermigua. Remnants of pre-Hispanic traditions contribute to create the atmosphere of a wild and primitive place. |

Like the rest of the Canaries, gastronomy is one of Tenerife's attractions. Its simplicity exalts the quality of the native ingredients, including fresh fish, pork and goat, excellent vegetables, including potatoes, and tropical fruit. The first course may consist of a variety of thick soups made of watercress, squash or a variety of vegetables. The "vieja" or widow fish must also be mentioned, along with marinated pork and goat. Indispensable accompaniments are red and green mojo (an emulsion of paprika and cumin with chilli, oil and vinegar served with hot fish; green mojo uses fresh coriander leaves) and papas arrugas (wrinkled potatoes are new potatoes boiled in seawater then baked and served with spicy mojo sauce). The local wine made with the grapes of Malavasía is strong, dry and quite excellent. Gomeran cuisine has similar characteristics to the other Canary islands but with its own nuances. Almogrote is a tasty spread made of cured cheese elaborated with goat's milk, garlic and red pepper. Gomeran pastry is also delicious, particularly the fine sponge cakes and biscuits made of almonds. Other delicacies include pelotas de gofio y miel de palma (wheat and corn toasted and ground into cereal mixed with palm tree honey and torta de cuajada, made with fresh cheese. |

The island’s volcanic origin and special position on the Atlantic Ocean have granted it some singular features. This landscape offers activities related with the outdoors, including trekking, hiking or mountain biking. Indeed, nature and sports go hand in hand in the Canaries. There are also numerous marinas to provide for sailing and other water sports. Although the climate is generally mild all year round the islands are only 60km from African continent, so take plenty of sun creams to take the edge off the sun. It is also a good idea to hire a car to help get around. |
