"What a wonderful place Quinta de Boa Viagem is. The name means "good voyage" and indeed the whole experience was just that. Upon arriving, Jose, the owner, took me on a lovely tour of all the strikingly beautiful and historic grounds, insisting I make myself at home everywhere, not just in my cottage. Over the course of my eight nights there, Jose proved to be a superior host, always thoughtful and quick to help. The cottage itself was of the same quality as a high-end hotel, only better because it came equipped with an efficient little kitchen and a balcony overlooking small farms and the ocean in the distance. The cottage interior was superbly clean and modern and a real joy to call home for a few days. The grounds of the estate are quite old, with gorgeous flowers, lemon and orange trees, a small vineyard, and fountains scattered around that create the most relaxing atmosphere imaginable. There is a small pool and a soccer/football patch if you are visiting in warmer months. Breakfast was wonderful each morning, served at whatever time was good for the guests, and included plenty of fresh homemade rolls, cheese, ham, jams, fresh juices, and tea/coffee.

The location of Boa Viagem is unique; it is perched just about the outskirts of the town Viana de Castelo. It is not in the countryside, but this proved to be a good thing. I had a car but it would be possible to get to the estate without one, given trains run regularly to Viana and then it would be a short taxi ride from the station to Boa Viagem. This area of Portugal is lush and full of interest, particularly if you enjoy rural culture and outdoor adventures. The local beaches were excellent and it's a short half hour drive to the National Park for outstanding hiking. Also, be sure to visit Ponte de Lima, another short 20 minute drive from the cottages.

A word about the directions for getting to Boa Viagem. As I was not familiar with driving in Portugal prior to this visit, I got quite lost and drove to the Spanish border (just 30 minutes away so it wasn't terribly far), because I didn't realize you must take the exit for Viana de Castelo off the highway. You need to drive through the town itself, not go around it on the highway. The turnoff for the tiny road that winds up to Boa Viagem is difficult to find too. It is between two buildings just before a traffic light and the parking lot for a small restaurant. There's a very small building on the left there too that I used as a guide once I knew where I was going since the signs (both the Turisimo and the one for Boa Viagem itself) are very small.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!"
