Troia Tips
Boat trips on the Sado
SetubalVisit the Sado Estuary and Arrábida Coast not only for the spectacular scenery but also to take a glimpse of the school of bottlenose dolphins (several dozen) that make their home there. Different types of boats available, including an old salt transport ship with sails. The Albergaria Foz do Sado will be happy to help arrange the trip.
Setubal, Portugal’s fourth largest city, was once one of Portugal’s most important industrial areas (and before the major earthquake of 1755 reputedly the country’s finest city after Lisbon).
For many years now it has been progressively substituting its industrial capacity with a service based economy, much of it geared to tourism. You can see why. The town retains a faded charm and its superb locating on the Sado Estuary and great beaches nearby make it an interesting place to explore.
Places to see include the 16th century cathedral (Igreja de Jesus) and the Castle of São Filipe. Also interesting are the Museu do Arqueologia e Etnografia and the Roman ruins at Cetóbriga.
