O Painel

Estrada Nacional 1, Aguim(231512984)

Roast Suckling Pig ("leitão") is the most popular dish in the Bairrada and although the "Painel" serves one of the best, the menu consists of much more than "leitão". This restaurant has an amazing wine list, and an owner that is an expert on local wines, and is glad to share this knowledge. "Leitão" and a good Bairrada "Espumante" is one of my favourite Portuguese dishes, and there are few better places to sample both than the "Painel".

Boat trips on the Sado

Setubal

Visit the Sado Estuary and Arrábida Coast not only for the spectacular scenery but also to take a glimpse of the school of bottlenose dolphins (several dozen) that make their home there. Different types of boats available, including an old salt transport ship with sails. The Albergaria Foz do Sado will be happy to help arrange the trip.

Setubal, Portugal’s fourth largest city, was once one of Portugal’s most important industrial areas (and before the major earthquake of 1755 reputedly the country’s finest city after Lisbon).

For many years now it has been progressively substituting its industrial capacity with a service based economy, much of it geared to tourism. You can see why. The town retains a faded charm and its superb locating on the Sado Estuary and great beaches nearby make it an interesting place to explore.

Places to see include the 16th century cathedral (Igreja de Jesus) and the Castle of São Filipe. Also interesting are the Museu do Arqueologia e Etnografia and the Roman ruins at Cetóbriga.

Cooking classes & wine tasting

Sintra and surroundings(www.insider-cooking.com)

Our workshops are divided into three categories:

Elaborate cuisine, selective environment: Let yourself be guided by the savoir-faire of a professional cook. Experience the atmosphere of a beautiful manor house and enjoy a selection of our best wines.

Traditional cuisine, in private: Come and enjoy traditional recipes in a private environment. With the help of a lady from the village, together we will prepare a typical Portuguese meal, and it goes without saying that our wines and olive oils will not go amiss.

Taste and enjoy: No cooking involved here! Rather, we will taste and enjoy typical products including wines, olive oils, cheeses and much, much more. As with the other workshops, the surroundings have been specially selected.

Lisbon Tipps

Lisbon Life

Belém Cultural Centre, which holds the Berardo Collection, one of the great modern art collections of Europe.

The 16th Century Jerónimos Monastery (a must see), Torre de Belém (again a must see), the Monument to the Discoveries, which boasts great views from the top, the tropical Garden Museum, Naval and Coach Museums and even the Gulbenkian Planetarium.

If you want to put on a bit of weight, then we heartily recommend a trip to the Belém “Pastel de Nata” bakery. It is impossible to have just one of their delicious custard tarts, the recipe of which remains a secret even to this day. (Allegedly, only 3 living persons at a time are thought to hold the recipe).

You should plan at least a couple of days to explore the rich variety of Lisbon’s quarters (bairros) and attractions.

Alfama is the oldest part of Lisbon, going from the walls of the castle São Jorge down to the Tejo. High above the city centre to the west of the Baixa is the so called Bairro Alto. This is the natural place to wind up at night. Well worth a morning or afternoon stroll to explore.

The Baixa is Europe's first example of Neoclassical design and urban planning. The lower town is very much the heart of the city and main shopping area.

The Parque das Nações, the former EXPO area, is still worth a visit.

Outside Lisbon there is a lot more to see:

Sintra, a world heritage site, has all the charm of a fairy tale town and was once described by Lord Byron as "the glorious Eden". Sintra has beautiful palaces old residences to visit, particularly the Palácio da Pena, Castelo dos Mouros, Convento dos Capuchos, Palácio da Vila and luxuriant gardens of Monserrate.

Costa da Caparica is a thoroughly Portuguese resort with restaurants and summer bars. It is a perfect place to swim or laze around on the sand. Located south of Lisbon, getting there is by way of crossing the Tagus Bridge or a ferry boat and bus.rnrnEstoril and Cascais can be reached within 20 min. from Lisbon.

Estoril was once known as the "Portuguese Rivieira" with grandiose villas and luxury hotels whereas Cascais was an old fishing village with pretty houses by the sea, is now a major resort. Both villages are connected by a beautiful promenade along the coast.

Serra da Arrábida, between Setúbal and Sesimbra is a peaceful nature reserve with its own microclimate that has created unique tree species. There are numerous animals, as well as excellent beaches to enjoy. On the way you can stop at Azeitão, a town renowned for its wines and cheese.

Praia do Guincho is a beautiful beach and a superb spot for surfing and windsurfing. Located just outside Cascais, a car is required to get there.
