"A red farmhouse on a hill in the Allgäu, where slowing down comes naturally"You won't see it coming. One moment you're climbing a winding road, then quietly it appears amongst the meadows and grazing cows — a red farmhouse, simple and self-possessed, sitting naturally in the landscape with fields, farm tracks and the faint outline of mountains beyond. You can tell immediately, nothing here feels overdone. And to be fair, that’s the whole idea behind Rosso.

The Story Behind It

Christian Müller and Lisa Rühwald weren't looking to open a guesthouse. They were looking for one to stay in, somewhere in Germany that met their sensibilities and didn't feel like it had been put together by someone who'd never actually stayed in one. When they couldn't find it, they built it instead. One empty wing of a centuries-old Bavarian farmhouse. No architects, no hospitality consultants. Just old wood, honest materials, and a philosophy borrowed from Japan — Wabi-Sabi, the idea that imperfection isn't something to fix but something to appreciate. The beams show their age. The objects have histories. The communal table has been around long enough to have earned its place. They called it Der Hof der Möglichkeiten — the farm of possibilities. Lisa and Christian built it together, and Christian carries it forward today with the same intention it was started with.

Where You Sleep

Three loft apartments, each between 68 and 90 square metres, with high ceilings, warm wood and a small balcony that lets in the afternoon sun. It’s pretty simple. You unpack properly, sleep well, and let the morning arrive without hurry.

La Bella
is the smallest at 68m² and the one for two. The ceilings are the highest in the building, which gives the room a quietness that square metres alone don't explain. A large double bed, a hanging chair in the gallery above, and a very short walk to the sauna. Good for couples, close friends, or anyone who came here specifically to stop for a few days.

La Famiglia
was built with children in mind, properly. The carpenter made bunk bed alcoves in the children's room — the kind that make bedtime less of a negotiation. A hanging chair hangs from the exposed beams, the double bed is wide, and at 80m² there's room enough that nobody needs to be patient about space.

La Grande
sits in the southern gable of the old threshing barn. Two double beds, an extra bedroom, 90m² and a window that looks out at the Zugspitze in winter. On a clear morning it's worth setting an alarm for.
All three have a freestanding copper bathtub, a rain shower, underfloor heating, a fully equipped kitchen, ecological bedding from Grüne Erde, and bathroom products from Primavera. The details are considered without being fussy.

We Think You'll Love

There are many things to love about Rosso. For a start, the sauna, built from aged timber with a Swiss pine infusion, is the kind you actually want to use rather than admire. The atelier also has a fireplace with enough space for a yoga group, a working day, or an evening around the table with friends. Last but not least, the sun terrace has an herb garden and a grill that catches the light well into the evening. The lawn has Alpine views, sunbeds and swings. We haven’t even gotten to the practical side of things yet. There’s a small farm shop stocked with local produce for mornings when you don't want to go anywhere. Children are genuinely catered for, too, with high chairs, baby beds, bamboo plates, and plenty of games to keep them entertained. Dogs are also welcome for a small cleaning fee.So imagine this day: Breakfast on the balcony. A walk through the countryside. Back for a swim or a long bath. A glass of something by the fire as it gets dark. Let’s keep it simple, and that's the whole point behind Rosso.

What the Estate Offers

Three self-catering loft apartments in the Allgäu. Indoor sauna with Swiss pine infusion. Atelier with fireplace and wood stove. Sun terrace with herb garden and grill. Lounging lawn with Alpine views and swings. Farm shop with local produce. Studio space for yoga, meditation, painting or group gatherings. Full children's equipment throughout. Dogs welcome. Pick-up from Allgäu Airport Memmingen or local train stations on request. Flexible check-in and check-out wherever possible.

Getting There & Getting Around

A car is the practical choice — though Christian can arrange a pick-up if you're flying into Allgäu Airport Memmingen or arriving by train. The farmhouse is on a hill near Altusried, a small town of around 7,000 people. The Allgäu Alps are 25 minutes away — hiking in summer, skiing in winter. Castle Neuschwanstein (yes, the Disneyesque one) is 30 minutes in the other direction. Farm shops for local produce are close by, and walking and cycling routes run through the surrounding fields and meadows in every direction. This is rural Bavaria. There are no bars within walking distance, no restaurant strip down the road. If that's what you need, this isn't the right place. If it isn't — then you’ve come to the right place.
Das Rosso. A farm full of possibilities, and one of the quietest good ideas we've come across in Germany.
