Sardinia is definitely a Rolls Royce amongst holiday destinations (well, at the very least a BMW or Mercedes) and which can be best described as sophisticated and fashionable as well as generally expensive! Yet it can also do rustic value for money really well. For example, the Ca La Somara is only a few minutes away from the sophisticated Costa Smeralda in northern Sardinia, but it remains an idyllic rural bliss. It’s a chill out sort of place, one ideally placed to get away from the rat race, and that’s exactly what the owners, Alberto and Laura, did themselves. They escaped the hectic city life to turn a 20 acre stable house (probably for mules as the name Somara actually means mules in Italian) and its grounds into an uncomplicated but comfortable accommodation where relaxation is the order of the day. So, Ca La Somara comes with 12 simple, rustic rooms, each one different each other but benefiting from hand painted ceramics, wooden beam and terracotta tiles befitting the traditional Sardinian style. Common areas take in hand made rugs, equestrian motifs such as saddles and happy bright colours. And just to enhance its natural credentials, it even has a resident donkey outside, which we believe is a rare Sardinian mule, and a very friendly one at that. The location of Ca La Somara, which is a few minutes from the coast, brings with it some advantages. The sea and the mountains can be reached equally easily and it helps keep the rates reasonable! All in all, a seventh heaven for lovers of natural scenery where you can either just relax or enjoy the many nature activities such as horse riding, sailing, trekking or cycling amongst other things. History buffs will also enjoy the numerous archaeological sites in the region. Breakfast is not your normal cold buffet set up but a superb hearty homemade experience (eggs laid by the resident chickens, for example) taken under the porch.  Alberto and Laura’s friendly relaxed generosity will also help things tick along and will help you make the most of this special place.
