The character of the Alentejo means a warm welcome and rustic charm.
Originally the rural house of the local Blacksmith, Monte da Fornalha has been renovated and transformed from a state of ruin into a very attractive and comfortable accommodation.
Nevertheless, it retains its true Alentejo character as typified by the large chimneys, enormous lounge with 2 huge fire places that is airy in summer and warm in winter, white walls, beamed ceilings and a pervading air of simplicity. Decoration is of excellent taste, with perhaps just a hint of Moroccan influence. The swimming pool is excellent and inviting too.
Orlanda, the hostess, is utterly welcoming and willing to help on things to do and see. And there are many! Fornalha is situated between the pretty towns of Estremoz and Borba (which holds the annual Wine Festival in November) whilst the surrounding area is excellent for horseback riding, trekking and bird watching.
We stayed at Monte da Fornalha for 3 nights and loved it!
The owner Orlanda has made a magical ,beautiful oasis home in the Alentejo.
Orlando's garden is heavenly with lovely quiet areas to read and relax.
The pool area has a Moroccan feel with lounges and different areas to move around for either shade or sun.
Our room was fabulous and cool with a sitting area outside. All very stylish with well chosen furniture, lighting and interior fittings. Our bed was so comfortable too with crisp linen.
Orlando's breakfasts were delicious- freshly cut up fruit, yoghurt, muesli, croissants, walnut bread and our best was her moist scrumptious cake!
A perfect break to relax and enjoy the birds and cowbells, thanks Orlanda.

El hotel cumplió las expectativas, que eran altas. Sensación de estar en un lugar propio, más que en un hotel. Preciosos la decoración, la piscina y la vegetación. Desayuno estupendo.

We simply loved everything about our stay at Monte da Fornahla. Orlanda is the most gracious host making herself available to assist with enquiries and reservations for meals in the local area. The hotel itself is beautifully maintained & styled and provides an atmosphere of pure 'retreat'. Every corner warrants soaking in for its style and welcoming spirit including the honesty bar. Our room was spacious, super clean and again every detail had been considered including matches to light the candles. Breakfast was served in the gorgeous 'living / dining room' and was in the similar style to everything else - just delightful. The pool and surrounds were gorgeous with enough space to enjoy not feeling 'on top of' other guests enjoying the pool and surrounds. Everything about this place felt like tonic for the soul!
