It is hard to know where to begin, because Locanda Rossa has it all. It is one of those places that, without trying too hard, fits almost any idea of a holiday.
It suits honeymooners just as well as families with energetic children, thanks to the space, the range of activities and the thoughtful corners for every pace. The coast is close for beach days, while the hotel itself sits amid greenery, olive trees and that calm, classic Tuscan landscape.
For guests who come to truly switch off, the set-up is spot on: a spa with hammam, hydromassage pool at 32° degrees, treatments and quiet areas designed for proper downtime. And for those who prefer to stay active, there is plenty to do, including two outdoor pools, tennis and padel courts, bicycles for exploring the surrounding lanes and a children’s play area.
Locanda Rossa began life as a country estate and has grown over time without losing its charm. It is a small cluster of reddish buildings set into the landscape, with 33 rooms and 4 private villas. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the location, in the far south of the wild Maremma, is a highlight in itself. Over the years, the hotel has added indoor outdoor dining and lounging areas, a second pool, 20 new bedrooms and suites and, most recently, a versatile events space. The look is modern, the setting traditional, and the combination works beautifully.
The team is friendly and attentive, always ready with a smile and happy to organise whatever guests might fancy, from reserving sunbeds at nearby beach clubs to boat trips, kitesurfing and windsurfing sessions, cooking classes, wine tastings and guided hikes in the surrounding hills. During summer, there are regular yoga and Pilates classes (at an extra charge).
Rooms, with a softly feminine touch, are very well equipped and full of small comforts, including an espresso machine and kettle, complimentary water and chocolates, generous wet room style bathrooms, bathrobes and in house amenities. Many come with a private garden, and the two bedroom suites include a kitchenette, which adds welcome flexibility.
There are several room categories, from simpler options in the original building, minimalist and elegant, to the newer rooms, larger and more striking, with contemporary design and plenty of personality. For longer stays or family trips, the standalone villas are a particularly good choice.
Food and drink live up to the rest of the experience. The restaurant is easy and enjoyable, with local produce (often from the garden), sea and land dishes, and a menu that works equally well for a special dinner or something more informal at the bar. Breakfast is a real highlight, and the hotel can also prepare picnic baskets for day trips.
There is plenty to explore nearby. Around 35 minutes away are the dramatic Etruscan towns of Pitigliano, Sorano and Sovana, as well as the hot springs of Saturnia. The Giardino dei Tarocchi by Niki de Saint Phalle is also close, with its bold, oversized tarot sculptures and a visit that feels essential. For something quieter, the Etruscan site of Vulci is within easy reach. Wine lovers will find several Morellino di Scansano wineries nearby, offering tastings and cellar visits.
Locanda Rossa is a place where quality is clear throughout, and where guests are really paying for a stay that feels cared for, comfortable and full of small luxuries that genuinely make it worthwhile.
