Casas na Areia

Casas na Areia is four lovely cabins built around an almost disarming premise: sand underfoot, all day long. For years it was João Rodrigues’ family retreat; in 2010 he decided to share it, turning the place into a unique place to stay that tends to lodge itself in memory. 

An hour from Lisbon, you cross the Sado and the tempo changes without announcement. You’re in Carrasqueira, just three kilometres from Comporta village and beach: close enough to dip in and out, yet with the distinct sense of being on your own, unbothered by neighbours. 

Looking at the photographs, the thought arrives quickly: the sand floor is beautiful… but do I really want that in my bedroom? The idea is handled with a neat practicality. Sand takes centre stage in the main thatched house, the shared heart of the property: a well-equipped kitchen, a long table, comfortable sofas, and a calm that settles in straightaway. Outside, adobe, timber, cane and straw echo the old fishermen’s huts of the area. 

Cabins 2 and 3 are white, pared-back little houses with a bedroom and private bathroom, opening to views of the pinewood. Cabin 4 adds two bedrooms and two connected bathrooms, set up for four people. The best way to do it is to book the whole set, and keep the privacy intact. 

Days drift around the pool, with green stretching out and storks cutting across the sky. The one small caveat—so this paradise doesn’t read as too perfect—arrives at dusk: mosquitoes. 

And Comporta, just down the road, has that curious quality of a place in vogue without the theatrics: good tables, well-chosen shops, a summery hum that never quite drowns the quiet character of the surroundings. You come for the architecture and the barefoot logic; you stay for the lightness that clings to you, like sea air on skin.
