This area of Sicily is somewhat different. It maybe just as beautiful as the other parts of the island but it takes in the Hyblean plateaus, untouched natural scenery and carob forests. In the background always the sea.
The Eremo della Giubiliana is slightly different too. Starting off life as a 12th century feudal estate, it eventually became a convent with connections to the Knight Templars of Malta. Even today it retains the strong, very thick stone walls and its strategically defensive position means it is lady over all it surveys. The fantastic views literally seem to go on and on, taking in the plateau, coast and sea beyond. In fact, on a clear day you can even see Malta and the African coast. Located some 8 kilometres from Ragusa, once there don't let the austere rustic beauty of the place fool you.
The estate has now reinvented itself as a splendid luxury rural accommodation. Much work has gone into making this transition, with the idea being to keep as much of the past as possible, without compromising comfort. of course. Original materials include ancient pitch stone and limestone floorings, for example, whilst rooms have been converted from the friars cells. Though relatively small they include some lovely Sicilian style furniture and original pieces making each room as unique as the region. It is very much an oasis and with a bar, restaurant, swimming pool and spa treatment available, there are many reasons just to stay put and relax.
But the strategic position of the Eremo makes it an ideal base to venture out into some of the most beautiful archaeological sites in southern Europe - all less than half an hour by car.
