Activities in Terceira

The Azores are a paradise for nature lovers. Whether hiking or water sports, there is something for everyone on Terceira. Between June and September, you can even see 25 different species of whales and dolphins as they forage off the coast. Terceira is one of the few places in the Azores where you get the opportunity to swim with rays. They are harmless and you can take tours that will take you to their habitats. Boats can be rented for deep sea fishing – however, you need a license to fish in the rivers and lakes. The flora and fauna on the volcanic island is a feast for the eyes and also for birdwatchers the Azores including Terceira are a worthwhile destination.

Algar do Carvão is one of the most famous caves in the Azores and also a popular tourist destination. It was formed by a volcano, which makes it easy to recognize the shape of the impressive high-altitude landscape.

A visit to the historic capital of Terceira, Angra do Heroismo, now a World Heritage Site, is a must for lovers of architecture. Angra is surrounded by an imposing city wall and is one of the most important historical cities in the Azores.

Gastronomy of Terceira

Limpets are served in many different ways, but they are especially tasty grilled. Cavaco, from the lobster family, is also very tasty, as are spider crab, squid and calamari. The Cozido das Furnas (meat and vegetable stew cooked in sealed vessels in the hot springs) is incredibly good. These delicacies are offered everywhere in the Azores. The best local wine is Verdelho Pico, served as an aperitif or digestif. Also try the Vinho de Cheiro (American grape), which can be found on most islands.
