The midlands - as the name already revolves - ly in the middle of Ireland, consisting of four counties. Its Irish name, which should not be unnamed as the Irish are proud of their culture and the Irish Gaelic language, is Lár na Tíre. The landscape is mainly mountains, forests, bog land and wild rivers. Most impressive about this region is the strong green of the grass, which you can find almost in whole Ireland. This part of the country is mostly unexplored, but it has a lot of cultural, archaeological and historical treasures to discover and especially the local people are very friendly and happy to welcome visitors.

Midlands activities

The highlight of the region is definitely the landscape. So, start by a hike through the forests and bog land of the Slieve Bloom Mountains with its gorgeous waterfalls and friendly villages. Then, continue and visit the Waterlands for discovering the countryside and experience some adventures. The Belvedere House Gardens and Park, the Emo Court & Gardens and the Birr Castle Gardens & Demesne offer nice gardens for relaxing walks. To experience part of Ireland's history, visit the Clonmacnoise Monastic Site at the river Shannon. There, you can see three typical high crosses, Cathedrals and the round towers. We also recommend to visit the Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre and the Lough Boora Discovery Park. A must do, is to visit either the Kilbeggan Distillery or the Tullamore Dew Visitor Centre, where you will experience the whisky making, its history and also have the possibility of a whisky tasting. The region itself is a paradise for walkers, anglers, bikers, horseback riders and golfers.
