Thirty hectares of ancient olive trees, cork oaks, and silence in the heart of the São Mamede Natural Park.

You don't come across A Sociedade Rural by chance. Hidden deep within the São Mamede Natural Park, this is one of the most personal and unhurried boutique retreats in the Alentejo. One that you deliberately choose to come to, not stumble upon. It is a sanctuary designed for leaving the pace of the city behind and recharging within thirty hectares of ancient olive trees and the silence of the Alentejo.

The Story Behind It

The Sociedade Rural has a fascinating backstory. Twenty years ago, Claudia Villax was working in marketing in Lisbon when she made a decision that most of her friends thought was slightly barmy: she upped sticks to the Alto Alentejo, one of the most rural and sparsely populated areas of Portugal, with her youngest child who was then barely a year old.

Alongside her husband, Miguel, she began work on what would become the estate today. It started with just two hectares of ruins and, by her own admission, absolutely no knowledge of country life. A quick learner, Claudia planted over a thousand trees—cork oaks, strawberry trees, willows, wild cherry trees, elders, and poplars. Rainwater was diverted to create lakes, and ancient stone walls were painstakingly restored to their former glory.

Over two decades, those two hectares blossomed into thirty. Six years ago, Claudia and Miguel finally moved here permanently to share their retreat with discerning travellers looking for a place where hospitality, agriculture, and nature all play a part in equal measure.

Where You Sleep

There are three houses in all, each built from local ruins and named after a native plant of the Alentejo. To preserve the absolute peace of the estate, the property is strictly adults-only, hosting a maximum of fourteen guests at any one time.

  • Casa Rosmaninho (The Rosemary House): The main house, where the reception and treatment rooms sit alongside the quiet atmosphere of a small rural inn. The three private, deluxe upstairs rooms accommodate up to six people and can be booked individually or as an exclusive group charter.

  • Casa Esteva (The Cistus House): Named after the aromatic shrub that covers the local hills in springtime white flowers. At 260m² on a single floor, it features two en-suite double rooms, two sitting rooms, a study, a fully equipped kitchen, and a wood-burning stove. Outside, private terraces surrounded by native herbs are made for long mornings, complete with a private spring-water tank for afternoon swims.

  • Casa Oliveira (The Olive House): Sleeps four across two en-suite doubles, with a sitting room, full kitchen, laundry room, and a shaded terrace under ancient olive trees—the perfect spot for a glass of Alentejo wine as the afternoon cools. Inside, vintage textures, a wood-burning stove, and thoughtful details—like gumboot stands at the entrance and bathroom pieces crafted from white clay found on the property make the house feel genuinely lived in.

We Think You'll Love

  • The Rituals: Breakfast on the terrace or in the shared kitchen—featuring orchard fruit, bread baked that morning, and fresh farm products. Later, head to the rooftop for sunset, or enjoy the heated spring-water pool and outdoor sauna.

  • Yoga in the Barn: A magnificent wooden structure with hay bales covered in traditional Alentejo blankets, featuring black-and-white photographs of rural life by Artur Pastor on the walls.

  • The Soil & The Vine: Plant walks with botanist Fernanda Botelho, who knows every species on the property by name and story. For wine lovers, there are tastings with Terrenus and Cabeças do Reguengo, as well as ancient-variety tastings with enologist Rui Reguinga, whose grapes are fermented in traditional amphorae and concrete eggs.

  • The Estate Shop: Stocked with estate olive oil, herbal infusions, ceramics, and a bespoke body care line made with Azeitona Verde olive oil. It’s the kind of shop you buy things from simply because most guests will want something to remind them of the place once they leave.

Getting There & Getting Around

A car is essential here, allowing you to fully explore this lovely part of the Alentejo. The Sociedade Rural sits close to Marvão, one of the most dramatic hilltop medieval villages in Portugal, and the beautiful town of Castelo de Vide. The Spanish border is also close enough for an easy day trip.

Lisbon is the nearest airport, located approximately two and a half hours away by car. For those preferring the train, you can reach Portalegre by rail, though a vehicle or transfer will still be required from the station.

This is one of those rare places that asks you to slow down and let the rhythm of the land get to you. Don’t rush it. Just enjoy.
