Idyllic hideaway in Cantabria.

It might not be the easiest place to find – this is a secluded hideaway, after all – but boy is it worth it when you get there, and without doubt the Posada Aire de Ruesga is also one of the best value for money accommodations around. Basically located between the sea and the mountains, less than an hour from Bilbao and close by to the Ason Natural reserve, this lovely 16th century stone house just oozes tranquility and nature.

The sound is almost deafening, whilst the views as you enjoy a candlelit dinner in the in-house restaurant are just awesome. The whole house is, in fact, pretty romantic. Aside from the views, it comes with a lovely big fireplace in the central lounge which on cooler nights is the perfect place to enjoy a drink. For warmer climes there is always the terrace and porch around the house or even the well maintained gardens to go for a stroll glass in hand. Those are the public areas but the 10 ample double rooms, some of which come with their own balcony, have just as much character. As we say, wonderfully relaxing, romantic and secluded. Yet it is near enough to Bilbao and 20 minutes from great beaches for it not to become too solitary.

We had a wonderful stay at the Posada. The proprietor could not do enough to make our stay as pleasurable as possible. The room was excellent with a lovely balcony and amazing views. The food was excellent which meant we didn't need to travel to dine. We enjoyed a great hike to the cascadas in the national park. The Posada is a very easy drive from Bilbao or Santander. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Beautiful location, friendly owners/staff

We spent a very pleasant week at Posada AIre de Ruesga. The setting is so peaceful, the views incredible, and the location is perfect for exploring the area. Normally, the only sounds you hear are cow bells, frogs and the breeze. However, during our second night, the town (a few houses, really) had its annual fair, which, in Spain, involves loud music until the wee hours. It would have been nice to have been warned about it, as many guests are trying to get away from civilization (they did tell guests who booked with the hotel directly). The hotel is comfortable and relaxed with friendly owners and staff. They provided some things we forgot and accommodated our requests, even switching us to a better room when it became available. While we enjoyed our stay, there were some details which were lacking. For example, the pool area needs attention (more and newer lounge chairs), the ceiling lights had no covers in our room, the breakfast could use a little more variety (types of bread, having hard-boiled eggs), and the mattresses were hard. We would return for the views, peaceful setting, and location.
