The six cottages that make up the wonderful Montes do Telheiro started off life as work houses where “telhas” (or tiles) were made, hence the name Telheiro. Though these are no longer produced, what remains is a beautifully restored estate providing comfort with a typical Alentejo style and respect for nature. Hats off to Clara for taking over this abandoned group of buildings and refurbishing them to their original picturesque design.
The setting is idyllic as the houses are located in the middle of typical Alentejo countryside, with its rolling plains and cork trees that can be seen for miles on end. The great beaches of the protected Alentejo coast are also relatively nearby (some 20km of pleasant, isolated country lanes to get there).
Clara herself has personally taken care of the decoration for each cottage, and being an interior decorator by profession has had the keen eye to tastefully combine the traditional rustic elements such as the old Portuguese faience and motifs with modern comforts and furnishings. Each house, for example, is equipped with all the appliances and furniture necessary to cater for a relaxing stay. There is a swimming pool at the main house for all the houses.
Activities include biking, horse riding, trekking and soon will include a hunting reserve. Perhaps you will just want to enjoy the privileged location and relax. This is one of our favourite Secretplaces in the region and an ideal one for the traveller looking for total isolation and Alentejo tradition within a natural setting.
We had a nice stay in the Herdade do Telheiro.
We had two houses, one(1) with a nice view on nature, very quiet, and the other one(2) had a view on the road(but not a lot of noises at night)...
The houses are nicely arranged, the house1 was nice with place for eating outside under trees, and a barbecue but inside there were no bed for a couple (so we had to sleep separatly...) and the "mezzanine" count as a room which was not possible with little kids(hot in summer, dangerous stares and no protection),
the house 2 had a bed for two, and a bed for a child
It was nice, the owner was very nice, the swimming pool was great (1 minute by car) with a nice view and animals on the farm. Fresh bread every morning :)
The location is not far from a lot a beaches, very practical. Near of Odeimira by car. and 5 minutes to an supermarket.
A little bit more expensive than other places of that kind in Portugal
What a nice place!

We enjoyed the time at Carlas place very much! The spacious house with barbecue grill and terrasse outside is very comfortable and loving and tasteful furnished in a rustical portuguese style. The surrounding is a beautiful quiet open landscape. From the refreshing pool at Carlas house (with the playful dog Chica, which amused us very much) or from the hammocks you have also a great look over the hills. Carla is such a sympathetic lady, who brought us fresh food and vegetables from her garden and eggs from her happy chicken. Thank you Carla for your warmly hospitality!

Positives: isolated country location, peaceful and nice outlook over the country. Clean house. Great communication prior to our visit advising of shops and places to eat etc. Check-in/checkout procedures flexible and straightforward. Everything provided for the first breakfast (milk, bread, butter...) and fresh bread delivered every 2 days.
Negatives: swimming pool not easy to use as it's at the main residence (1,5 km away).
Kid's room accessed by parent's room (not good for intimacy). Creepy beds in the kid's bedroom. The house could do with a bit more comfort.
