L’Escale de l’Atlantic is a splendid countryside hotel on the extreme eastern part of the island of Pico and provides an excellent view of the island of S. Jorge.
Indeed, it lies just across the water. In all there are five rooms with private baths as well as a varanda sea view.
Each room is named after one of the islands of the archipelago. “Terceira” is highly recommended for families with children, as in addition to its two beds it also features a mezzanine, whilst its walls have drawings of whales. The small port of Calhau is only five minutes away by foot and is a good place for swimming and diving.
The hotel was actually built by the owners themselves with, as they themselves say, a “great deal of love”. And it shows. Many people return on a regular basis to this beautiful part of the world.

While the rooms are nice and clean, we got the impression that the hotel was built on facilities for a standard house. It was hard to get a normal shower, the water temperature fluctuated constantly. One wasn't allowed to throw paper in the toilet, which is not very hygenic and rather uncomfortable during summer time. We could hear our neighbours talk so we were happy to have silent neighbours. Parking space was a problem.
The hotel is located in an area of private homes and in a small backstreet. It has two parking spaces and one can barely turnaround in the tiny street. We were happy to have booked only two nights in the place. I wouldn't call it a secret place.
