Originally a late 17th century baroque building, Solar da Gloria ao Carmo was rebuilt in 1990 after a fire. Much of the original detail was maintained whilst modern up to date comforts were added. All bedrooms have a private bathroom.
The house itself is located near the beach (only some 300 metres away from Praia das Milícias and Praia do Pópulo, considered to be two of the best sandy beaches of the island) area and fishing, horseback riding and golfing at Batalha Golf course are all quite close at hand. It is a mere five minute drive to Ponta Delgada.
The lush lakes of Sete Cidades (15kms) and Lagoa do Fogo (10kms), as well as the 18-hole golf course of Batalha (10kms) are most definitely worth a visit.
Our hosts were great. They had a rental car delivered to the hotel for us, were very accommodating and gave good advice on where to go/what to see on the island. If you enjoy a leisurely meal with a different wine for each course reserve a place for an evening meal at the hotel.
The rooms were "old style" reflecting the centuries old building. It was refreshing to not have a TV and be able to relax with a good book. The hotel does have wi fi but we did not use it.

Easter break 2012 - Hotel Solar da Gloria ao Carmo

Having originally booked only 3 days in the Solar da Gloria ao Carmo, we extended for another 4 days to cover our complete stay on Sao Miguel.
We found the place great, the rooms are rather liittle suites, beutifully decorated, high ceilings, quirky in a very positive way.
All in all, you do not feel like being in a hotel but rather like living as a guest, in a private mansion.
Breakfast was superb and varied, from day to day and Jose and his wife went out of their way to help us with hiring a rental car, the booking of events like whale watching and - on half a day's notice - horseback riding as well as providing us with a host of valuable information as to where to go and what to see.
We spent a whole week exploring the island and had a great time, the Solar da Gloria ao Carmo being the near-perfect base.
