Quinta de Luou

In northern Portugal, the word quinta often suggests a grand estate, or manor house, but Quinta de Luou is something slightly different: a working farm with three beautifully restored houses to stay in. Barrosã cattle, sheep, ducks, and chickens roam the property, an organic vineyard supplies the estate’s own wine and the produce of the land will likely end up on the menu. This isn't a staged rural retreat but a genuine agricultural estate where three historic houses have been opened to guests.

History here goes back a long time. Property documents mention "Fernão de Luou" as far back as 1515. The estate has remained in the same extended family across centuries and passed from the Viscount of Torre (who died without an heir in 1912) to descendants on his wife’s side.

The main house reflects these centuries of evolution: 16th-century stonework frames the kitchen, an 18th-century extension added the main façade, and a roofed porch was built over the central staircase around 1900. During the 2011 restoration, the family preserved the original timber ceilings throughout, cutting just one skylight into a bathroom ceiling to bring natural light into the thick stone walls. Sometimes, even 500 years of history has to make way for a better bathroom.

Three independent, self-catering options sit on the farm grounds:

·         Casa de Luou (1st Floor | Sleeps 8): The manor’s grandest space spans 350m² across four bedrooms. It occupies the upper floor with open views across the Lima Valley, operating with complete independence and its own private entrance.

·         Casa de Luou (Ground Floor | Sleeps 11): Built for larger groups across six bedrooms (two with private bathrooms). Designed for big family reunions or joint group holidays.

·         Casa do Tanque (Sleeps 6): A rustic three-bedroom cottage named after the granite water tank on its private patio. It features central heating for cooler months, access to the estate pool, and cribs in every house for families travelling with young children.

Experiences & Activities

You can arrange a tasting of the farm's own Loureiro — a crisp, aromatic white wine native to the Ribeira Lima. The estate kitchen also offers set-menu regional dinners (€40 per person), featuring traditional soups, a local main course, and house wine.

Children can explore the grounds or participate in the farm’s annual animal sponsorship programme for calves, lambs, and ducklings.

For an evening in town, Restaurante Amália in Viana do Castelo offers traditional dining accompanied by live fado on Wednesday and Friday nights.

·         Drinks on the granite patio at Casa do Tanque as the sun sets over the valley.

·         Walking directly from the doorstep onto two mapped trails: an easy 4.8km path along the Lima River, or a 5.8km loop through neighbouring farms.

·         Traditional climate control: thick stone walls, solar-heated water, and heavy wooden shutters that keep the interior cool at midday.

·         Watching the farm’s geese make their evening rounds while you eat dinner on the terrace.

Getting There & Around

A car is essential. Quinta de Luou is 6km from the A3 motorway (Porto to Vigo), putting Porto Airport under an hour away. Nearby Ponte de Lima — one of Portugal’s oldest towns — is an 8km drive and covers practicalities with supermarkets, pharmacies, and restaurants.

River beaches are minutes away, while the Atlantic coast at Cabedelo, Afife, and Moledo is roughly 30–40 minutes via the expressway.

One final note: the pool is shared among the three guest houses, and farm paths run nearby. It offers a peaceful atmosphere with clear private boundaries, but it is a communal working estate rather than a completely isolated hideaway.
