At 620 metres in the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park, Quintas do Montinho feels more like a private hilltop world than a conventional rural stay. The estate covers nine fenced hectares between Portalegre and Marvão, with wide Alentejo horizons, cork woodland, fruit trees, private trails and the kind of silence that becomes part of the experience. Guests come here for space, privacy and nature, but also for comfort: two independent houses, one with a more contemporary villa character and the other with a lighter, loft-like feel, both designed for slow days, long views and evenings shaped by sunset.

Where You Sleep

Montinho 1 is the larger house, arranged across two levels and designed for families or groups who want generous space without losing privacy. The first-floor master bedroom has a king-size bed, an en-suite bathroom and access to a private terrace made for watching the night sky. On the ground floor, a second en-suite bedroom with a queen-size bed sits close to the living areas, while a third bedroom with two single beds is served by a separate bathroom.

The interiors are contemporary, calm and carefully composed, with an open-plan living and dining room, a sleek kitchen, a laundry room and a separate office for guests who need to work while away. Outside, the patio extends the house into the landscape, with outdoor dining, designer furniture and open views across the hills.

Montinho 2 is more compact but very spacious in feeling, with 126 square metres of newly built architecture and a high-ceilinged central living area. The kitchen, dining and sitting spaces share one bright volume, made for easy, sociable days. There are two queen-size bedrooms, both with en-suite bathrooms, and the master suite opens directly to the garden.

Its great pleasure is the 130-square-metre veranda, where the house becomes an outdoor retreat. There is a sunset pool, an alfresco dining area, designer outdoor furniture and an outdoor fireplace that makes the terrace inviting beyond the summer months.

A Bit of History

This is not a place that relies on a grand historic narrative, and that is part of its appeal. Its character comes from the land itself: cork trees, orchards, high ground, privacy and the protected mountain setting of the Serra de São Mamede. The wider park is known for its greener, more mountainous character within the Alentejo, with oak, chestnut, cork oak and holm oak landscapes, as well as historic towns such as Marvão, Castelo de Vide, Alegrete and Portalegre nearby.

Experiences, Services & Local Discoveries

Life here is largely self-directed, which suits the setting beautifully. Guests can walk through the orchards, pick seasonal fruit such as oranges and figs when available, follow the estate’s private 2 km trekking trail through cork woodland or use the 1.5 km private mountain bike trail. Both houses are designed for independent stays, with full kitchens, outdoor dining areas, private parking and strong climate comfort throughout the year.

Montinho 1 has air conditioning in all bedrooms and heating throughout the house. Montinho 2 has underfloor heating and cooling throughout, as well as direct parking at the property.

The surrounding region rewards curious travellers. Marvão, one of Portugal’s most striking hilltop villages, rises on a quartzite ridge within the natural park, while Portalegre offers convents, noble houses and a long tapestry-making tradition. Castelo de Vide, Alegrete and the Roman remains around Ammaia are also part of the cultural landscape. The park itself is recommended for walking, birdwatching and discovering a cooler, greener side of the Alentejo.

We Think You’ll Love

  • The rare sense of privacy: nine fenced hectares, a private road and no immediate sense of neighbours.

  • The altitude and views, especially at sunset and under clear night skies.

  • The choice between two distinct houses: Montinho 1 for larger groups and Montinho 2 for a lighter, loft-style retreat.

  • The private trails, orchards and cork woodland, which make the estate feel immersive rather than merely scenic.

  • The location between Portalegre and Marvão, with nature, history and small-town Alentejo culture close at hand.

Getting There & Getting Around: You Should Know

A car is strongly recommended. The appeal of the estate lies in its privacy, altitude and natural setting, so guests should expect rural access and independent movement rather than doorstep public transport. The houses are set within the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park, close to Portalegre and within reach of Marvão, Castelo de Vide and other historic villages of the Alto Alentejo.

The setting is peaceful and secluded, best suited to travellers who want nature, privacy and self-catering comfort. It is also a good choice for longer stays, especially for guests who want space to work, walk, cycle, cook and slow down. Summer brings long dry days and dramatic evening light, while spring and autumn are especially appealing for walking and exploring the region.
