The boutique style Porta Azul Guest House is in many ways a typical by product of 19th century Bourgeois Porto, what with its bare stone walls covered with relief patterned tiles, where the colour and brightness of the sun's reflection on the glaze of the tiles cheerfully combines with the dark and sombre tone of the granite.
This type of house began to be built by the Portuguese returning from Brazil after the country's independence in 1822; they came prepared to invest their fortunes and to socially assert themselves as part of the bourgeois elite.
Unlike many others, however, the interior has been done up wonderfully to a great modern standard. One intelligently renovated with sober luxury, stuccoed ceilings, the enhanced stained glass, the palatial layout of the house’s divisions and the central staircase illuminated by a magnificent skylight.
This is particularly evident in all its 6 rooms, which range from standard doubles accommodating 2 single beds, to the superior doubles (double bed) and Junior Suite, which is the largest room of all and looks out directly onto Porto’s emblematic “Crystal Palace”.
So, it combines a certain historic class with a lightness of touch more often associated with modern style.

I was completely delighted with the hotel as well as with the team. All very kind and helpful in all matters to make my stay a great one. The delicacy of a little dose of Porto wine for a little taste of the region was amazing.

Highly recommending this Hotel. It is very centrally located, the Hosts are of extraordinary friendliness and very helpful in exploring the fascinating City of Porto. The renovated building is fascinating, the rooms nicely designed, and we even got our breakfast in a doggy bag since we had to leave so early to catch our flight :)
idyllic, historic & super-friendly

what an idyllic place! i was welcomed very cordially and soon felt in love with the house, its rooms and the perfectly but modestly designed garden. The renovation of the house has evidently been done with a whole portion of sense and sensibility.
the local host-family who live in the upper stories are addressable most of the time and do their "hobby" really with all their heart. Thanks especially for the up-to-date restaurant-hints!

Wir verbrachten drei wunderbare Tage in Porto. Das Wetter war durchwachsen. Die Freundlichkeit und Warmherzigkeit der Gastgeber im Porta Azul ließ uns das mehr als vergessen.
