This is different and quirky, that’s for sure! Even the name “the Dwellings of the Unicorn” is unusual. But there is something in the name. The unicorn as a legend is a lover of beauty and an impressive thing to behold. A magical and mystical creation. And so is Las Moradas del Unicornio, to be quite honest, not only visually and decoratively, but also in terms of the culinary experience on offer. You can order a meal on request a day before and this is something you should try at least once.
A fusion of Navarran and Catalan cuisine, it is a delight. Olga Castells is not only a wonderful host who warmly greets her guests, she's also a superb cook! Of course, it also helps that the Las Moradas del Unicornio is located in Púbol, across the road from the Gala Dalí Castle, home to Salvador Dali and his wife Gala Dali and is open to the public. It boasts a garden with an outdoor pool, a large library and incredibly ornate rooms that must be seen to be believed (we’ll let our photographs to do the talking on this one) and are spacious featuring tiled floors and wooden furniture. All come with private bathroom and there are various lounges and sofas throughout.
Getting there: Girona Airport is only some 45 minutes’ drive away. El Prat Airport (Barcelona) is a little further away and takes just over an hour. Renting a car is certainly recommended in order to make the most of the so-called "Golden Triangle" (a number of small charming towns of the Middle Ages in Girona, of which Pubol is one).
....thx to olga and kim for this lovely stay we had! if you need some quiet, relaxing holidays, thats the place to be! love it! ????????????
Magical!
We were looking for something a little different and were taken with the unique and quirky look of the house along with its very special location and history. It is not your average B&B and it is certainly not your average B&B price, but we believe you get what you pay for in life.
We stayed in the White Unicorn room which we found very comfortable, there was a lounge and separate bathroom. According to Olga this room has mystical powers!
We felt like we were visiting old friends even though this was our first visit to Olga and Kim’s home, and despite the slight language barrier we found a common bond and always managed to understand each other. Kim was also there to translate from time to time and had a great knowledge of where to go and how to get there.
If like us you want to get away from it all; relax and feel completely detached from the hustle and bustle of every day life this is the place for you.
We loved it so much we plan to go back next year as it is rare that you find such a place and such delightful people.
Exquisite
My wife and I stayed at Las Moradas last June. It was a little hard to find (enter Pubol, not Girona, in the GPS), but once there we were welcomed ever so warmly by the hostess, Olga Castells (whose husband is a famous landscape photographer.)
The guest rooms are beautifully appointed, and soft mediaeval music combined with Olga's amazing cuisine combine to produce a truly romantic setting. The property also adjoins the fascinating Dali Gala castle.
If you are looking for something different, tasteful, respectful and intimate, I suggest you share with us this delightful abode.
