A wonderfully located Rome hotel, with plenty of character to boot.
The Santa Maria is certainly not the type of hotel you imagine to find in a bustling downtown city, and certainly not one as energetic as Rome. Located in the narrow streets of Trastevere, just a few steps from the Piazza Santa Maria, this small Rome hotel is a Pandora’s box of delightful surprises, a real refuge of calm laid out within a labyrinthine layout of colourful narrow streets. Within this backdrop, and spread around the backyard of the surrounding buildings overlooking it’s courtyard, one can find the rooms, which are located on the ground floor, the end result of which is a large open space that gives the place a lovely airy atmosphere.
The large orange tree lined patio is filled with chairs and tables where you can relax in the afternoon sun while sipping your macchiato, all this in the centre of this historic neighborhood, famous for it’s many restaurants and local bars. Though the hotel dates back to the 17th century cloisters, it was completely refurbished in 2000. The room’s decoration is simple but perfectly comfortable making it a superb base from which to discover Roma.
The Santa Maria’s location alone would make sure of that, given its location in one of the most ancient and characteristic districts of Rome, where guests can easily walk to the city’s historical and archaeological center.
It is difficult to convey how special this place is. The outdoor space is beautiful, the staff is exceptionally welcoming and helpful, the rooms are clean and simple and comfortable. Everything is exactly as it should be, from beginning breakfast out in the courtyard to returning for campari and soda and relaxing after a day in the madding crowds. They light candles at night in the courtyard, and you feel as though you are coming home in the best possible sense. Trastevere is a wonderful neighborhood. I will never stay anywhere else in Roma!

Hotel Sainta Maria was wonderful! The hotel is so well placed in Rome for visiting everything on foot. The staff are very friendly, speak good English and give good advice. I believe they can organise visits for you too, for example to the Sixtine Chapel (I talked with an american couple who went through them and they were enchanted).
The hotel is pristine clean and our junior suite was perfect. Good beds too!
The breakfast and the "happy hour" (17h00 to 19h00) were excellent, taken Under the orange trees which cover the garden totally. The food was top quality.
The most important point of this hotel, for us, was the total abscence of noise - you go through the gate of the hotel and you could be in the countryside - Rome seemed so far away with its hustle and bustle.
It would be a "must" hotel for Rome for us, for future visits to this beautiful capital.

This a special place with warm, welcoming owners and a cute location with all the infectious character of Trastevere just outside - and a short step away from the rest of the city. The facilities of this small hotel are perfectly adequate - not 5 star luxury but still clean and comfortable and supported by a great staff team.
