Há Mar ao Luar

Boutique bed & breakfast near the beautiful Arrábida Hills. Há Mar ao Luar can be roughly translated as “Moonlight by the Sea”. The name may indicate this old converted mill is near the Ocean and the night stars here are pretty exceptional, but it does not prepare guests for the absolutely paradisiacal views of the Sado Estuary and Ocean that awaits them.

The vistas it affords are truly magnificent, and with it being a haven of peace and quiet the Há Mar ao Luar is simply an excellent spot to get away from it all. It also has the added bonus of being located in one of the most interesting regions of the Lisbon Coast - the Setubal Peninsula and Arrabida Hills - just some 30 mile south of the capital. If you’ve also always wanted to stay in a mill, then here’s your chance, for in addition to the three houses and thatched roof cottage that make up the Há Mar ao Luar, there is also an old mill that proudly stands at the highest point of the estate and from whose terrace the views simply blow the mind away.

One can almost be forgiven for forgetting about the place itself, but it does the area justice with simple, light airy and comfortably decorated in understated proportions. Local rustic pieces combine with the paintings of lighthouses and ships to good effect, both in the mill and the cottages. If you can tear yourself away from the views then nearby you will find impressive granite ridges rising out from the sea, lush Mediterranean flora, sandy beaches, coves (some of which are can only be reached by boat) and superb natural settings.
