Santa Luzia is a quiet fishing village on the eastern Algarve, famous for its octopus, its waterfront, and its proximity to the Ria Formosa, one of Portugal's most protected and beautiful natural reserves. And the 3 Casas na Ria sit right at its heart, three independent houses sharing the same building - and an unhurried philosophy - on a tranquil side street a hundred metres from the water. It is a place where life moves slowly, measured more by the sun crossing the courtyard than by the clock.

Each of the three houses works perfectly as its own unit, but when combined through interconnecting doors, they become a single fluid home sleeping up to ten. Yet the beating heart of 3 Casas na Ria is surely its central courtyard. A space where the interior and exterior seem to merge together. Hidden from the outside world, it comes with two heated pools and is simply a perfect spot to enjoy a sunset swim or quietly stare at the Algarve sky at night.

Where You Sleep

Casa das Canas (up to 4 guests) enters from the quiet Travessa das Canas and has a generous ceiling height, a traditional four-pitched roof, a double bedroom, a fully equipped kitchen and a cosy mezzanine for an extra sleeping area or reading corner. It doesn't connect directly to the courtyard, but combined with Casa das Buganvílias it becomes a six-person house with full pool access.

Casa das Buganvílias (ideal for 2) is the one for a couple. Full of personality and colour it is a light-filled double bedroom facing the central courtyard, an intimate sitting room and a kitchenette with Smeg appliances. It connects to either of the other two houses, making it the flexible heart of the trio.

Casa da Ria (up to 4 guests) sits on the first floor under a traditional roof, with full views and direct access to the courtyard and pools. A double bedroom, two single beds in the mezzanine, a spacious living room, a fully equipped kitchen, a pergola terrace for breakfast, and a rooftop terrace with views over the Ria Formosa.

Backstory

As Gui and Paula - and let’s not forget Caju, the family dog - the urbane owners say, it all started in 2015 when they acquired the property as a family holiday home. They didn’t initially set out to open a guesthouse, and the summers were spent by the Ria Formosa, a stretch of protected estuary that seems, as Paula puts it, “almost untouched by time.” By 2018, however, the seed had been planted and it became a guesthouse. In 2020 the courtyard appeared, with its pools and olive tree, planted as a Mediterranean symbol of renewal and calm. By 2025, the project had found its full shape as 3 Casas na Ria.

"We didn't just create a holiday home — we created our refuge,” say Gui and Paula. A place to “disconnect, breathe, and live slowly.”

Experiences & Activities

The courtyard is where most days begin and most evenings end. Two heated pools in smooth cement, a pergola for breakfast and the olive tree that stands at the centre of it all. Walking barefoot on the soft cement between the house and the water is, according to Gui and Paula, one of the small rituals that defines a stay here.

Santa Luzia itself deserves your attention. The village is flat and entirely walkable whilst the Ria Formosa waterfront, its cafés and restaurants are all a short stroll from the houses. Santa Luzia is the self-declared capital of octopus in Portugal, and the restaurants take that responsibility seriously. The Casa do Polvo Tasquinha and Taberna Amaro are the local references. For something further afield, Chef Noélia in Cabanas de Tavira is worth the short drive, and Come na Gaveta in Tavira proper is a good evening out.

The beaches of Praia do Barril and Terra Estreita are a kilometre away - reached on foot, by bike, by boat or on the charming local tourist train that crosses the saltwaters and dunes to the open sea. Kayaking through the Ria Formosa channels, exploring the salt pans of Tavira, or getting lost in the timeless hilltop village of Cacela Velha fill days. Tavira itself, its Roman bridge, white churches and good food - is two kilometres away and definetely deserves your attention.

Getting There & Getting Around

Santa Luzia is actually well served in terms of transport. Faro Airport is approximately 35 minutes by car via the A22. From Lisbon or Porto, the Alfa Pendular train runs to Tavira station which is only five minutes away by taxi.

Once in Santa Luzia, a car is largely unnecessary for daily life. The village is flat, walkable and entirely pleasant to wander - everything you need is within easy reach on foot. For the beaches, the tourist train or a boat crossing handles the journey and is far more enjoyable than any road.

For wider exploration - Cacela Velha, the inland serra villages or the quieter corners of the eastern Algarve - a car is useful. But the honest truth is that most guests find they leave it parked and stay closer to home than they planned.

Gui and Paula built this for themselves first and only later decided to share it. That sense of personal love still defines the experience today. aleman espanol e portugues
