Tavira is a town that moves to its own quiet rhythm: crossing a Roman bridge for morning bread, white-tiled façades, and fishing boats drifting along the Gilão River. Tucked into a quiet square in the historic centre sits Danna—not a standard hotel, but a collection of three independent houses (Porta 7, Porta 10, and Porta 11) built around private patios, a Mediterranean garden, and a swimming pool.

Designed by renowned architect Manuel Aires Mateus, the houses honour Tavira’s traditional scissor-roof geometry while introducing soaring white ceilings, thick walls, and precise natural light. Inside, living spaces open directly onto shaded courtyards and terraces, creating an uninterrupted flow between indoors and out.

The Backstory

The property began as three historic dwellings on one of Tavira’s finest squares. The owners commissioned Manuel Aires Mateus to unite the structures into a single retreat without losing the character of each one, maintaining the original street façades so the square still feels unmistakably Tavira.

Two other key creatives shaped the final result: Carlos Coelho decorated each house with functional, unpretentious Portuguese furniture chosen for comfort rather than display. Landscape architect Maurice Levy designed the walled garden—a tranquil composition of Mediterranean flora, gravel paths, and quiet corners to lie in the sun or dine under the stars.

Where You Sleep

Each house has its own character and suits a different kind of stay:

Porta 7 (90m² | Sleeps 2): A secluded single-bedroom sanctuary looking onto a tropical patio. The bedroom features a flexible king/twin layout, accompanied by an open kitchen equipped with Bosch appliances, a Bora induction cooktop, and an Alessi kettle. Ideal for two people looking to disappear into Tavira for a few days.

Porta 10 (145m² | Sleeps 4): Located on the upper floor, featuring two bedrooms and an expansive rooftop terrace overlooking Tavira’s rooftops and the river. Floor-to-ceiling natural light fills the main living areas throughout the day.

Porta 11 (240m² to 500m² | Sleeps 2 to 10): The main estate house centred around the pool and private garden. It can be booked as a 1-, 2-, 3-, or full 5-bedroom private compound and includes a lovely custom outdoor bathroom built into the garden wall.

Danna T3 House (Sleeps 6): Combination of Porta 7 and Porta 11, whereas both apartments are connected from the inside.

Danna Full House (Sleeps 10): Combination of Porta 7, Porta 10 and Porta 11

Danna Long Term (Sleeps ?): From November 1st to April 1st it is possible to stay minimum 2 months. A discount on the apartment is possible.

For the 3 options mentioned above, the enquiries would need to be upon request and the breakage and safety deposits are different.

Experiences & Activities

Set in the middle of Tavira, you do not need to drive anywhere to feel like you are on holiday. The castle is a short walk away, the Roman Bridge is two minutes on foot, and the Camera Obscura in the old water tower offers a unique panoramic projection of the town below.

For the beach, a short ferry ride crosses the salt marshes to the sands of Ilha de Tavira. Further west, a miniature train at Praia do Barril runs across the dunes past the historic Anchor Cemetery to a great local fish restaurant. The Ria Formosa Natural Park offers coastal birdwatching and calm waters, Benamor Golf is nearby, and the Pego do Inferno waterfall sits inland for freshwater swimming.

In practice, many guests do very little. They move between the kitchen and the terrace—swimming, reading, cooking dinner, and opening a bottle of wine. Tavira is slow, and Danna is built for that slowness.

We Think You’ll Love

• Having three independent houses that work equally well together or separately.

• The ability to swim in a private garden at Porta 11 while sitting in the middle of a historic town.

• The open-air garden bathroom at Porta 11.

• The understated design, where every piece of furniture feels chosen with restraint.

Getting There & Around

Faro Airport is 45 kilometres away (about 35 minutes by car). Once in Tavira, a car is unnecessary unless you plan to explore distant beaches along the coast. The historic centre is pedestrianised, placing the Roman Bridge, castle, main square, and daily market within a few minutes’ walk. The local train station connects to Faro and the rest of the Algarve for easy day trips.

Date of stay 26/09/2026
Beautiful little apartment, very stylish and very good located, 5 min. by foot to the Praça da Republica. Helpful "house manager", nice limited view to a little tropical garden (1 banana plant, 1 yucca still developing, 1 unidentified plant). Helpful little things to start: coffee (tricky coffee machine...), lot of fruits, white wine, bread etc...
