The Blue Eyed Sardines may be a funny name but even so it says a lot about this chic bed and breakfast. By that we mean it is offbeat in the nicest sense. The owners Tanur Shah and Gilles Nicolet have managed to perfectly blend the big city style with the pastoral bliss of a 17th century home surrounded by olive groves and vineyards close to a 12th century hamlet.

It remains a country bed and breakfast at heart, however. And though it does not come with the whole caboodle of amenities – no TV, for example - the atmosphere here is magic, decor is contemporary rustic, in need of a better word, and the welcome pure gold.

The three bedrooms and two self-catering apartments are very much imbued with this character and so cosy that you may not want to leave them. Otherwise you could miss the medieval atmosphere of Uzès, and nearby Lussan and Pont du Gard are pretty magical too, as is much of the relatively unknown countryside, which is just gorgeous.

As would be expected from charming owners who have two children and a number of cats, the Les Sardines aux Yeux Bleus is very child and animal friendly. Families will love that, those looking to get away from kids perhaps not so much.

Whatever camp you fall in, however, one absolute truth remains. The place is pretty special so if you're visiting the area and want to stay in a unique accommodation, this is the perfect choice for you.

We were visiting relatives living in Nimes but wanted a stay in the countryside allowing Us and our kids to relax and move around. Les Sardines was a perfect place for that. We stayed in one of the apartments, which was comfortable and provided enough space for us to get a quiet time once our kids were asleep. We also enjoyed the breakfast in the beautiful dining room downstairs. The weather was not as cooperative as we hoped but still warm enough to go around the garden by the swimming pool. And last but not least, one will not find nicer hosts than Gilles and Tanur, who were always available to help and give us advice on places to visit. They helped us realise how much the region has to offer. As we come to the area from time to time to visit family, we’re very likely to come back to les Sardines.
