Like the "3 Little Piggies" fable, this house was built from straw. Unlike the "3 Little Piggies" fable you can't huff and puff this house down. Straw bales, along with clay and wood, were used throughout to make what is supposedly the first ever house over 3 floors built without any stabilizing construction such as wooden beams.
Why? It is just as sturdy, highly insulating from both heat and cold, very eco-friendly. Plus it gives a place such a warm feeling, a sensation that more habitual raw materials, such as stone, simply cannot match. And it’s a perfect match with the region.
The natural requisites of the house going hand in hand with the natural beauty of the South Tyrol countryside, mountains and all. The four self catering apartments are utterly comfortable (see details below) so don’t think that the basic materials used imply a basic level of service. Far from it. In fact, even decoration is somewhat different and unique. Richard, the co-owner, is a freelance artist and many of his paintings and objects d’art are used liberally throughout. Location The Strohhaus is located in Langtaufers, an isolated valley famed for its purity of air and natural beauty.
Nature may be Queen here, but culture also abounds. The lovely medieval village of Glurns, the monastery of St. Johann (UNESCO World Heritage) in the Müstair Valley, the Churburg Castle in Schluderns, as well as the towns of Meran and Bozen are all nearby. So this picture postcard perfection of an area offers more than simply picture postcard beauty.
