The Baudon de Mauny takes in history, chic and sumptuousness in one easy stride. Built in the late 18th century and owned by the same family for over 7 generations, it was transformed into a wonderful 2 floor accommodation by Alain de Borda and his wife, who definitely know more than a thing or two about decoration.

They've managed to create 5 exhilarating rooms/suites, where high ceilings (some ever 4 metres high), large spaces and unique 18th century decoration come to meet the cutting edge of avant-garde. It works a treat! The sense is of staying in a chateau, yet you are in the middle of one of France’s best looking cities.

And here’s another plus point of the Baudon de Mauny. Despite the energy and coffee shop culture of Montpellier, this type of classy, boutique hotel is still rare here. So it is all the more welcome for that and a great base for discovering this fascinating city and region. As with many historic places and centres, however, parking is a problem. If you do have a car the best thing to do park it in a central a car park as possible (the Corum centre, for example) and walk. Remember too that as an, admittedly rather sumptuous bed and breakfast, it does not run on hotel lines.

Rooms:

Les Gypseries - one of the two junior suites, is the hotel’s largest, and has a mammoth-tubbed bathroom, floor-to-ceiling windows and a walk-in wardrobe. The hand-carved bucolic scene above the doorway is especially eye-catching, and the faux fur bedspread is wonderfully snuggle-soft. The two suites, Les Papillons and Les Pavôts, on the ground floor are ideal for long stays or family visits, as they share a full kitchen. Look out for the striking Cole & Son wallpaper (in particular the flamingoes in double superior Les Flamands Roses), themed on each room’s name.
