The College Hotel
Hotel Type: Hotel
Number of Rooms: 40
The name of this hotel is spot on in more ways than one. Firstly, it is housed in an absolutely beautiful 19th century old school building. Secondly, it recently underwent a metamorphosis to transform itself into a super 40 room training hotel.
So the name could not be more appropriate. In effect, it is managed by students under the auspices of top notch professionals. As they say, the best way to learn on the job is often on the job, so to speak. Now, this unique way of running a hotel brings with it two important aspects. Firstly the students are keen and energetic to learn, which is definitely a plus. Secondly, their relative inexperience may sometimes create some hitches, though nothing major or untoward. To many, it will just add to the quirkiness of the place.
Another paradox is that despite being run by students with large modern rooms to boot, there’s something rather old world about the hotel. The wooden beams remain as do the sloping ceilings and there’s a certain formality about it. Under dressing is not particularly condoned.
As you might have guessed already, all of our hotels in Amsterdam are superbly located and the College Hotel is no exception. This one, however, is tucked away in a flourishing residential area, yet only a few minutes walk (no more than ten) to Amsterdam’s best shopping, museums and sights.Truth be told, the College hotel is in its own way become a hot spot of Amsterdam itself. Its excellent restaurant and bar are definitely “in” and attract many Amsterdamers to enjoy what it has to offer. So this truly memorable hotel manages to incorporate several paradoxes - the old with the new, formal yet stylish and actually quite hip, etc - with great aplomb. By the way, if you want to try the restaurant, its best to book early. You’ll find out why after having a meal there.
