The Vicentine Coast of the Alentejo - one of Portugal’s blessed regions.
The area between Zambujeira do Mar and Vila Nova de Milfontes is famous for its wild windswept beaches, seaside villages and cliffs. Storks still happily make their nests all year round on the roofs and chimneys of houses (a wonderful sight). If the legend of storks bringing babies was true, then this would surely be one of the most populated areas of Europe. Thankfully, the opposite is true.
But we digress. On top of it all, it boasts places such as the Herdade da Estacada, an 8 room rural accommodation (four in the main house and four in an annex) located within a 100 hectare estate with its own lake, no less. The values are very much based on the Alentejo. That means nothing ostentatious but plenty of rustic charm, light and open spaces.
Rooms are simple with basic amenities but never less than comfortable and with large windows to let the unique light of the area shine through. The main public area is also comfortably endowed with sofas that seem tailor made for an afternoon siesta, particularly on balmy sunny days. As with most Alentejo constructions, the house seems to magically keep the heat out.
Maria, David and their four children also live here so it is a real working estate. Friendly and knowledgeable of the area, having lived here for over ten years, they are on hand to help in you in any way they can, but the sheer size of the estate (140 hectares, remember) in the middle of the Vicentine Coast Natural Park, and the layout and amplitude of the house itself, means privacy is guaranteed.
Things to do? How active do you want to be? You can laze around the natural lake, make the most of the bicycles at your disposal to explore the immediate environs, perhaps take a boat trip in the nearby Mira River, enjoy the beautifully wild beaches of Zambujeira do Mar.
