Stockholm - Venice of the North

Sometimes Stockholm is called the Venice of the north, regarding that it is actually built on 14 small islands, connected through 75 bridges. Small, grey blue glistening canals float through the narrow streets and open squares, passing old chestnut trees, Gothic churches, traditional Swedish architecture, small cafés and boutiques. The atmosphere is young, progressive, modern. Independent designers and artists are settling all over Stockholm, making the city a blossom of style and taste. While culture, tradition and history are still alive, numerous of museums and attractions, like the historic quarter Gamla Stan or Djungarden, the island where most of the famous museums are located.

Activities

Stockholm is mainly characterized by its numerous canals. So of course one of the main attractions is to take the water bus while exploring the city In small boats you can move around the historic centre and enjoy the beautiful architectural highlights from there. Heart of the city is the old center Gamla Stan, which is built on three closely connected islands. Here you can find the royal castle, the Riksdagshuset, the parliament house, or the Storkyrkan, the Swedish dome. Also, Gamla Stam passes over to the modern and creative quarter Södermalm, which is full of vintage shops, galleries and design boutiques. Cute little cafés follow modern trends and offer lots of vegetarian options. Especially beautiful is also the museum island Djurgarden, 10 minutes away from the center, accessible by waterbus and home to the city's most important museums. Pick your favorites, because there are so many that you won't be able to see all of them, but make sure not to miss the Vasa Museum or the outdoor museum Skansen. After all that cultural and historic input you can have a walk through the forests and meadows of national city park Djurgarden, beautifully crossed by lots of tiny canals.
