A few things one should know about the delightful Casas da Mata Cerca.

Firstly, location is some 700 metres above sea level in the “Serra da Estrela Natural Park”. The “Serra da Estrela”, or Star Mountain, is mainland Portugal’s highest mountain range and is famed for its superb trekking, vistas and general “other wordly” feel, so to speak.

Secondly, Casas da Mata Cerca is made up of two small country houses, which can be rented out as a whole, if required.

Thirdly, the immediate phrase that comes to mind when describing the Casa da Mata Cerca is “great value for money”.

We’ve already established the location is beyond dispute, but within the Serra da Estrela range it also boasts its own 15 hectares of woods replete with oaks and chestnuts.

Lovers of good wine and food will be happy to learn that this is Portuguese “Dão” wine country per excellence and the famous mountain cheese comes from this area as well. Well worth trying if you get the chance.

Decor is simple, clean and functional but odds are you’ll be spending much of your time outside visiting the “Serra” with its awe inspiring views and taking advantage of the many possible treks and walks available.

On a clear day you might be able to see the sea over 150 kilometres away! There is plenty to see and do. Dramatic crags and ravines makes this area a stunningly beautiful drive or hike. There are several walking trails. In winter this magical area is transformed into a glittering white kingdom.

Indeed, the Casas da Mata da Cerca is definitely a place for nature lovers, at a very good value to boot.

Kleines Wunderland

place to relax

We stayed 2 nights in this tree-paradise. Mara is very friendly and she cooked very fine. It is worth to eat there for dinner. Many thanks to Maria.

The Serra da Estrela mountain range is famous for its hearty cuisine, wines and cheeses. Indeed, Casa da Mata Cerca is bang in the middle of the “Dão Wine” demarcated region and “Queijo da Serra” cheese production area, which is widely considered to be Portugal’s finest cheese.

Out and about there are many trekking areas available, wind gliding and all sorts of other activities with one thing in common - Nature is a part of the activity!
