An old world city like Porto deserves a top notch old world hotel, and that mantle, we can confidently say, belongs to the Hotel Infante Sagres. But here’s the rub, it was actually built in the 1950’s by a wealthy textile manufacturer. Even so, all the classical “fin de siecle” elements are there: 19th century paintings and furniture, carefully crafted fireplace, Chinese porcelain (antique dealers will immediately recognise the 17th Century Kang-Shi vase – very valuable indeed) and the whole classically sophisticated ambience inside which, looking at the relatively mundane facade from the outside you do not have an inkling of.

But if you don’t take our word for it the just remember this is the place that international Royalty often stay whenever they pass by through Porto. In short, if classical decor is your thing then you will feel totally at home here and it is no exaggeration to say that some of the public rooms are the best classically decorated a anywhere in the whole of northern Portugal. And the same goes for the bedrooms and suites which further manage to mix a further a baroque feel with contemporary. Then there’s one of our favourite places of the hotel – the patio which, weather permitting, is a lovely and refined place to enjoy a meal. You just can’t believe that such a peaceful place is in the middle of historic, bubbling Porto.

And we mustn’t also forget the location, which is extremely convenient and within walking distance of Porto’s famous Ribeira - riverside embankment - the opposite side of which are housed the Port wine lodges, as well as many restaurants and bars.
