There’s history to the Chateau des Alpilles, lots of it, as it actually goes back to medieval times. But for our purposes its starts off in 1825 when Pierre-Paul Blain had an imposing manor house cum castle constructed next to an old farmhouse.

You can see why he chose this area. Lush gardens, plane trees and a bucolic setting provide much needed respite from the stresses of life. Perhaps that’s why during the 19th century the Blain family entertained many of France’s top political and literary figures in this delightful spot. But as the family’s fortunes receded, so did the house which eventually fell into picturesque disrepair.

Fast forward to 1979, the Bon family saw the wonderful potential of the now derelict place and set out restoring it to its glorious best. The result is pretty special - an elegant fifteen room estate, with two outbuildings, run by the mother and daughter team of Francoise and Catherine Bon. Graceful, comfortable and welcoming it still retains the pulling power beloved by artists and thinkers of the past.

Bedrooms, whatever their size, are furnished with beautiful fabrics and come with high ceilings plus fireplaces. Getting to them is via a wonderful old staircase which just adds to the old world charm.

Summer is particularly enchanting, there’s something about dining under the plane trees, or simply taking a dip in the pool – it sets the scene for total relaxation and a great atmosphere.
