Atmospheric Lisbon hotel with great views of Portugal's capital

The As Janelas Verdes (translated as the Green Windows) is a small 18th century palace located in the typically pretty street of the same name in Lisbon. It is also next to the Museum of Ancient Art – a world-class museum and, along with the Gulbenkian, Lisbon’s finest. This Lisbon hotel certainly has a strong cultural and literary tradition. Eça de Queiros, the great 19th century Portuguese novelist is said to have lived there and based the magical home “O Ramalhete”, in his novel "the Maias", on the As Janelas Verdes.

The old wing of the Janelas Verdes, with its small objets d’art, paintings and mementos takes us back to a period when life seemed to be less rushed and more refined. The new wing, though it has a more contemporary decoration and feel, still blends in flawlessly with the existing atmosphere. All 17 rooms have a light airy feel, are very tastefully decorated and provide for some delightful personal touches. The do not disturb sign, for example, is simply a cushion with the word “schhh…”.

The upper terrace on the new wing further provides some great views of Lisbon and the river Tagus, whilst the small garden of hotel is an excellent place to breath in the calm of old Lisbon and enjoy breakfast.

As Janelas Verdes

Excellent

This is truly a special place, and by far the best hotel experience we had in Portugal during a two week trip. There's an attention to detail and a gentle friendliness about the place and its staff that would never be found in big chain hotels; and the quiet location with the view of the Tejo is marvelous, especially if you want to escape the noisy and commercialized touristy zones of Lisbon. You can get to Praca del Commercio and up to Chiado in 10-15 minutes by walking; although there's no Metro nearby we found it convenient to take taxis which are inexpensive in Portugal and arrive in 5 minutes. Having the (very quiet, but stunning) National Gallery next door is also a plus - do make a point of going there if you stay at the hotel.
