Casa dos Guindais
Hotel Type: Apartment
Environment: City
Number of Rooms: 5
Style: Elegant
This old house (early 18th century to be exact) is bang in the middle of the historic Unesco World Heritage quarters of Porto, near the Cathedral. It has seen a lot over time, the French invasions of 1810 for a start, and for many generations was a family home not open to the public.
Thanks to the current owners, however, Francisca and Álvaro, and a splendid renovation by top notch architects, it has now been turned into an extremely comfortable lodge that mixes the old with cutting edge. It makes a great base either for spending a relaxing weekend visiting the colourful sites and sounds of Porto or perhaps a longer stay to also take in the beautiful Douro countryside.
The renovation we have already touched upon not only complies with the original plan and preserves some of the old elements of the house, it has also added a dash of modernity and simplicity to proceedings. The items used throughout include some of the classic materials of this city – granite (Porto is sometimes referred to as the Granite City), iron, wood and glass.
For the visitor, that means five excellently done up and independent studio apartments equipped everything, basically (See room descriptions for further details). And all have that that solid, sturdy feel so typical of Porto. But there is also a garden and courtyard, which is sometimes not so easy to find in the heart of town.
And here we mean a location that is pretty much near to everything worth visiting, such as the aforementioned cathedral, Clérigos tower, The São Bento railway station (considered to be one of the most beautiful in the whole world due to its tiles) and the Majestic Café.
Something else that is great about the Casa do Guindais are the owners. This urbane and well travelled couple knows more than a thing or two about hospitality, that’s for sure, so we think that all in all, the location, the history, comfort and welcome make the Casa dos Guindais a winner.
Please note: This accommodation requires a pre-payment which should be done by Paypal. The hotel will provide details upon booking.

Casa dos Guindais Reviews
Wonderful Apartment
We stayed at Alvaros converted historical family home for 2 nights in March. There was 4 in our group so we booked the crystal rooms that can be opened up into one apartment. The weather was a little chilly so we didn't take advantage of the quite garden. I will be going back to Porto with my wife and will stay at Guindas. Alvaro is a great guide too, he knows all the best places to eat.

Perfect
This secret place has been carefully designed to suit those who prefer something different to a boring, busy hotel. The clean and precise decor includes carefully designed facilities without losing the historic features of the building. Ideally situated within walking distance to all attractions and metro stations, quiet and clean with a very helpful host. We will be returning soon.

Awesome spot down town Porto
Just outside the old town wall, we found a very pleasant place to stay. An old Porto-family house well restored/renovated. Very well equiped appartments and close to all the best of Porto. We can recommend this spot, for sure! A lot of local addresses and other places worth to visit were selected/listed by our host. Just awesome.

We recently spent 4 nights in Casa dos Guindais. The owners have really done something special with this new renovation. It is on a quiet street in a very convenient location - close to the Ribera and Gaia. Our host, Alvaro, was more than kind and amazed us with his hospitality.
