The Place Firenze is the closest experience you can get to staying somewhere that feels like home. Only far nicer than home, more luxurious, more stylish and far more relaxing; this is how you would wish your home to be if you had unlimited access to time, money and beautiful ideas. The design team have taken a historic Florentine palazzo and carefully added pieces to create a very special luxury hotel that has touches of a members’ club, a distinguished decor and an overall sense of calm and luxury. This is a place to take refuge from the overwhelming beauty of Florence, when the works of Michelangelo, Brunelleschi and Botticelli leave you gasping for breath or the ooze of the River Arno underneath the Ponte Vecchio makes you think, “Now, now is the time to return to the hotel and have a coffee, a slice of cake, a pause.” The Place is just the place to do this. Discrete on the outside (a mere bronze plaque on the wall indicates what lies within), stepping inside soon leads you to take a seat in one of those very comfortable armchairs and struggle to leave.
From the library of DVDs and the wonderfully refined and personable staff that can’t do enough to help you to the cakes left available for those seeking a little refreshment, the laptop on the table with free Internet connection, the complementary mini-bar, the exquisite taste in decoration and comfort, something about this hotel makes you think, do I really need to leave? The hotel has just 20 perfectly drawn rooms. Creams, greys and plenty of wood provide classic touches that fall somewhere between the cosy and the discrete charm of a members’ club. It’s classy, sure, but not pretentious.
This dedication to well-being continues with the hotel’s concierge service whose only reason to exist, we thought, was to make life and Florence the easiest and most calming city on our travels. Tickets to the Uffizi gallery and other museums can be pre-ordered meaning you avoid the long lines and even after-hours visits to the most important museums can be organized. Dinner suggestions roll off the tongue and not crass touristic venues but genuine Tuscan hostelries where you will be surrounded by Italians who really know where to eat well. The one thing we did note was that some of the classic rooms are a little on the small side but this is fairly common in Italy remember and the building is a historic palace so we let them off and indulged.
Ceilings are high, giving light and many of the rooms have wonderful views allowing details of the Florentine scene to wander in. If the weather is not so fine breakfast is taken in the lounge whilst on clear days the courtyard provides the venue and the start to a wonderful day.
