Six Senses Douro Valley

The hotel’s brochure starts off with an apt quote from Einstein: “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as if nothing is a miracle. The other is as if everything is a miracle”. Well, in a certain way the Six Sense Hotel is a miracle. Bold, design orientated and super hip, it could fit perfectly in any of the world’s great cities – Barcelona, London or Paris would not be a problem – as the sophistication of its modern design using Asian based materials, lacquered woods, steel and resin coated pieces throughout, is top notch.
Yet, it is located in the heart of the Douro, one of Portugal’s most beautiful, rural and peaceful regions, as well as a UNESCO world heritage region, also famous for being home to the Port wine. It is this contrast between style and bucolic location in Vale Abrão that makes it so enticing and, dare we say, miraculous. It makes the Six Sense Hotel a truly unique refuge on the southern banks of the Douro River.
Its 57 rooms are all unique with different shapes, sizes and views, which range from Quinta Superior, Quinta Deluxe and Quinta River rooms, to spacious suites and villas with one, two and three bedrooms. The good taste is to be found everywhere, even in the fabulous spa where you can get specialized treatment in natural or candle light, surrender to the wonders of yoga, a steam bath or simply enjoy the relaxing water beds.
There is even a fully equipped techno gym and cardiovascular gymnasium (open 7am to 10pm). So as you can see, rural idyll doesn't preclude sophistication and a design that would not look like out of place in some of the world’s greatest metropoles. At the Six Senses Hotel, you also have views to die for and you are in the heart of the Port wine country. Dining options at Six Senses Douro Valley are a celebration of the region with most of the products coming from the verdant valley and surrounding countryside. An organic garden of vegetables and herbs is located right on the estate. Fresh ingredients are harvested only as needed, assuring ultimate freshness and flavour. Two days at the Six Senses Douro House is enough to cure any diminished soul.
