Pousada de Tavira - Convento da Graça

The Pousada de Tavira may be one of the more recent additions to the selection of pousadas throughout the country, but it is, without doubt, destined to become one of the classics - In fact, it already is. Once the convent of the Cloistered Augustan Nuns founded in the 16th century, it has been converted into that very rare breed of hotel that perfectly blends history and atmosphere with modern equipment and comfort.
Plus there’s the location in what is, in our opinion, the Algarve’s loveliest and least spoilt town. Situated on the castle hill by the site of what was once the Jewish quarter, its Baroque style facade fits in comfortably and impressively with the well preserved historic centre. Thanks to a very careful restoration the interior is no less impressive. Highlights include the 16th and 17th Century Renaissance cloister and some archaeological traces – of Islamic origin - discovered during the renovation and incorporated into the decor.
The bedrooms, all 27 of them, are lovely and surprisingly large for such an old building and decorated in a manner totally in keeping with the august history of the convent. Facilities at the Pousada Tavira include restaurant, bar, cloisters, terrace, multi-function room, swimming pool, gymnasium, 2 swimming pools (one for adults and one for children) family games and parking. Add to this an extremely friendly service, great buffet breakfast (fresh fruit, cold meats and cheeses, local breads and fresh orange juice) and you get one of our favourite places to stay in one of our favourite towns in southern Portugal.
