A unique little hotel in Matera that has been carved out of the rocks.
You are now in World Heritage country, for Matera is a UNESCO protected site. The town is renowned for its "sassi" - dwellings carved out from the rocks - and the hotel Sassi, as the name implies, is constructed in the same vein. It really is a magical town and this unique little hotel, built in the 18th century and located near the centre, does Matera justice.
Rooms have been hewn out of the soft stone to give a spectacular effect. It may look basic but all the amenities are there and they even come with beautiful tiled bathrooms. Each one may be different but all come with terraces and balconies from whence guests can take in the sights of the Romanesque cathedral and the Sasso Barisano.
As a guest once said the whole place is beyond description, so please sit back and simply enjoy the photos, which in this case really do say more than a thousand words.
Staying in a Sassi hotel while visiting Matera really contributed to the experience. Be realistic and don't expect the Ritz, this hotel is dug into the mountain and several rooms are no kidding caves...but that's what adds to the ambiance. The staff was very accommodating upon our arrival and set up a tour for the next morning, going the extra mile to call several guides to make sure we got a reasonable rate. As advertised, there is no parking but the staff also recommended a parcheggio close by...the Parcheggio Piazza del Mulino, which also goes by Parcheggi Nicoletti Michele. They dropped us off in the piazza close to the hotel and delivered our car when we left....great recommendation.
Overall, a fantastic experience in a hotel that is located in the heart of Sassi Barisano.
Good Hotel in Matera

We stayed 2 nights and enjoyed the well positioned hotel in the historical part of Matera.
Small rooms, good breakfast.

The hotel is located in the middle of the ancient town. It has stunning views, however the dedication of the staff and the quality of the rooms and breakfast are nothing special. We had expected more of this unique place.
