The BBC gave the countryside hotel Casa de Casal de Loivos the accolade of having one of the 6 best views in the world. This praise is merited for the panoramic view over the Douro valley from the hilltop where the house stands is simply stunning and all rooms open out to the terrace to take full advantage of it. So impressive is the sight that it is almost easy to forget that the house itself is a beautiful historic place in its own right, full of family heirlooms such as the intriguing vitrines showcasing the owners’ great grandmother's clothes, or that guests will be spoilt to the full by the extremely courteous and professional staff. Built in the 17th century it has been in the hands of Manuel Pimentel's family since 1733.
Having suffered many years of decay and neglect he set about restoring it in 1991 with much energy. Changes include turning the stables and cellars into the sitting room and five elegant bedrooms, all of which enjoy those glorious views. There is also an adjoining honeymoon suite, which affords greater privacy. Despite the many attractive features of the house, what will stick in the mind will always be those views.
Maravilloso lugar y excelente atención, la terraza mirando al Douro es un lugar mágico. Volveremos.

We drove from Porto through stunning valleys of terraced vineyards. We arrived at the tiny village of Casal de Loivos. After taking a while to locate our hotel that looked unassuming from the outside we were speechless when we saw the view we would enjoy for the next 3 days. Breathtaking is an understatement. The rooms are basic but the impression must be gained from including all the fascinating elements of such a nostalgic house. We had a great meal on our first night. We also did a wine tour with the fantastic Paulo from Douro First. It was an incredible day. Very special. The staff at the hotel were very helpful and friendly- making our stay so much better.

Beautiful and very interesting house, very well appointed with lovely furnishings. Very relaxing and welcoming. Amazing position overlooking the Douro valley. Lovely terrace and swimming pool. Dinner and breakfast were excellent - home cooking in traditional style. We were very well looked after and made to feel at home.
Access and parking a bit challenging!
A special and memorable place.

The staff were very professional, courteous and friendly. We had booked a room in the annex, but as there had been a mistake in our booking we had a room in the main house instead. The staff were extremely apologetic for the error and were very generous in offering compensation. Thank you for your good will.
A 'family' dinner with the other guests was a novel, but delightful experience. The 3 course menu offered quiche and salad for entre; roast veal and vegetables for the main course, and a sumptuous gateau for desert followed by coffee or tea. The food was plentiful and delicious. We also had a bottle of the boutique house wine with our meal and a vintage glass of port to finish. Yes, it was expensive, but for us it was a special treat, in a very special place: delicious food, excellent wine, lively conversation made for a memorable evening.
Of course the location is superb with magnificent views over the Duoro valley.
