Torre mozza

The tower is literally anchored in the water. Built in the 16th century as a coastal lookout, today Torre Mozza has been transformed into a singular accommodation that retains the character of its origins: eight rooms, each offering a different view of the same sea. There are few places like this, where the rhythm of your stay is set by the constant motion of the waves against the very foundations.

Its stone silhouette seems forgotten by time. It sits within the Sterpaia Natural Park, a protected area of sand dunes and pine groves that give shade in summer and beaches that retain an almost untouched feel. From the tower, the first thing you notice is the ever-present sound of the sea.

Inside, the atmosphere is simple and unpretentious. Each room is different, shaped by the building’s original structure, not adapted for tourism but rather respected. One of them, the most sought-after, has a private terrace and outdoor hot tub with views of the Tuscan archipelago. The décor is sober, with antique furniture that feels timeless rather than staged.

That said, there are a few details to consider: being a historic tower, the building has many stairs, some of them steep, which can make access difficult for guests with reduced mobility. And while some rooms offer the feeling of having the sea all to yourself, the beach is not private. In the summer months, especially July and August, it fills with local families and swimmers enjoying the calm waters. It’s not remote or deserted, but the natural setting remains well preserved, and the tower itself still offers small, quiet retreats behind its thick walls.

The service is warm and personal. There are no stiff uniforms or formalities here. The staff remember how you take your coffee or if you prefer tea, and that casual hospitality sets the tone for the entire stay. In the lounge bar, drinks and afternoon aperitifs are served; on the stone terrace, breakfast is generous and seasonal: fresh fruit, warm bread, local honey, Maremma cured meats and regional cheeses.

In the evening, the Il Filibustiere restaurant takes over with a menu rooted in Mediterranean traditions. Chef Nicolò Valentino presents tasting menus that travel across Italy with subtle Asian influences, always keeping technique in the service of flavour. The dishes change with the seasons and the wine list highlights Bolgheri labels, mineral whites and full-bodied reds.

Guests also have access to a private sunbathing area with loungers set discreetly among the Mediterranean vegetation. The beach itself is sandy and, a little further out, a submerged rocky bar helps break the waves. This natural formation creates a kind of “sea pool”, a quiet spot to swim, float or simply drift without strong currents or crashing surf.

Up on the rooftop, an open-air hot tub becomes part of the daily rhythm, the ideal place to watch the sun set behind the horizon.

Inland, the area is full of walking paths and natural sights: the Montioni hills offer panoramic trails; the mining park of San Silvestro preserves industrial ruins that blend into the landscape; the ancient Etruscan sites of Baratti and Populonia await with history and views; and nearby towns like Piombino or Follonica round out the picture with seafood restaurants and a relaxed local vibe. Several good restaurants are within walking distance or a short drive, perfect for guests who appreciate variety without hassle.

The seasons change the scenery, but not its spirit. In spring, the air smells of wildflowers and the sea invites a first swim. Summer brings long days and light breezes. Autumn softens the light and empties the beaches. Winter turns everything quiet, and all the more contemplative.
