Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel

The Martinhal must be one of Portugal’s leading candidates for a luxury and child friendly getaway (yes, child friendly and getaway are not mutually exclusive). Being located within a protected natural park near Sagres, on Portugal’s unspoilt western Algarve coast also entitles it to the luxury meets nature award. So what you get is sun, beach, sea and surrounded by nature.
It’s basically the first time that all these elements have come luxuriously together in this, lesser known, part of the Algarve. It really is something else, that’s for sure. Stylish, contemporary architecture complements the organic personality of the resort, which has been designed to merge into the local landscape. And the end result is function and modern form at its best. This goes for the 38 luxury rooms (two of which are beach suites) with privileged views of the sea and 132 Village Houses (Ocean, Bay and Pinewoods).
Rooms at the Hotel
Beautifully positioned at the beach within the grounds of Martinhal Sagres Beach Resort, the 37 rooms on the main building and also outside, including two duplex Beach Suites, all have private balconies or terraces that afford impressive ocean views. The architecture combines a natural simplicity with contemporary style to create a building that appears organic, as if born from nature.
Garden houses
Arranged around an area of natural landscape the Garden Houses at Martinhal Sagres Beach Resort are semi-detached self-catering villas, set within the perimeter of a large walled garden with a large shared heated swimming pool. The villas have between 2 and 3 bed-rooms with sea view or with countryside view. All have verandas. British furniture and interiors designer Michael Sodeau has triumphed with a combination of furnishings that are both practical and stylish. Natural materials have been used throughout: timber, wicker, cork, and local stone.
Apartments 1 bed-room
The one-bedroom apartments at Martinhal Sagres Beach Resort are set within the same perimeter of a large walled garden as the Garden Houses. The apartments are located either on the first or ground floor. Both have a double bedroom, a bathroom with bath and shower, a fully equipped kitchenette, open space living room and dining area with sliding doors towards either a terrace or balcony. Some houses have a bunk bed in the living room.
Bay Houses
Located on the eastern side of the resort, these spacious and secluded houses enjoy tranquil views over the Natural Reserve and the ocean. Furnished throughout to the highest standards by British designer Michael Sodeau, the Bay House character is sophisticated and functional but pleasantly understated. The use of traditional materials such as timber, cork and wicker give a natural dimension to the modern perspective. The houses have been designed upside down, with living areas on the first floor to make the most of the unspoiled location. Furthermore, they have an east-west orientation and which allows for the best view from either side – with beautiful sunrises and spectacular sunsets. The stunning natural park is on the doorstep, but so is the hospitality and amenities of a luxury five-star resort. These houses are perfect for people traveling with their pet.
Ocean houses
The Ocean Houses at Martinhal Sagres Beach Resort command a prime position right at the heart of the resort. Carefully arranged in small, terraced groups at the front of Martinhal Village, the Ocean Houses are singular in their character and form. These spacious and beautiful village houses are built upside down, with living spaces created upstairs to take full advantage of the fabulous panoramic views. Ocean Houses have their own private verandas where guests can enjoy al fresco meals and watch the sun set in splendour. They have an outstanding location: the beach is on the doorstep as well as all the resort’s leisure and entertainment facilities.
Pinewood houses
The Pinewoods Houses at Martinhal Sagres Beach Resort are located within a separate area at the edge of a pine forest but still within easy access of the main resort facilities. Contemporary in appearance, the use of clean forms and lines underline a stylish simplicity that is also adopted inside. British furniture and interiors designer Michael Sodeau has insisted on high quality materials throughout, and has used natural timber, local stone and other products like cork and wicker to stamp the living spaces with an environmentally sound label.
Vilas Mimosa
Located on the Northeast side of the Martinhal Sagres Beach Resort, the Vilas Mimosa are stylish 2 or 3-bedroom townhouses with private garden and impressive views across the resort, the Sagres peninsula and the Natural park. Cosmopolitan in character yet maintaining a sense of tradition, all townhouses are independently owned and feature parking space in front of the house. The interior decoration is contemporary with comfort and quality as the central themes. Furnishings are stylish but functional. The upper floor is a large open space combing living room
