Let’s be honest: a lot of historic quintas in northern Portugal feel a bit like museum pieces where you’re afraid to touch the furniture. They’re beautiful, sure, but often dusty and take themselves a little bit too seriously. Not this one. Abandoned for a decade, then resurrected in 2020 by an irresistibly enthusiastic duo of expats (Ella & Sergey), Quinta da Boavista now goes by the name of Vinte – that’s means twenty in Portuguese. And yes, they've had fun with the number.

There are twenty chickens, twenty new tree species, twenty walking routes. Twenty dishes on the menu? All deliciously accounted for.

Six self-catering cottages in the Vinho Verde region, sleeping 2–6, each with its own personality — and none of them feeling remotely like a hotel room.

Casa Julieta is the one you book when you want to disappear together - just the two of you. Tucked away from the others, this romantic cottage in northern Portugal is a split-level hideaway with a living room upstairs — all wide sofa, wood-burning cooker crackling in the corner, and a romantic balcony where you'll linger longer than planned — and a bedroom below that opens straight onto a sun-warmed terrace with a daybed made for afternoon naps. Two bathrooms (one on each floor), a rain shower, a proper bathtub, and 100m² of cocoon-like calm. They call it the honeymoon suite. You'll understand why the moment you arrive.

Casa sobre a Vinha is for those who want a vineyard view cottage in Portugal with their morning coffee. The upper studio — fireplace, dining table, wide sofa, high windows — looks out over rows of vines and open pastureland in a way that makes you put your phone down involuntarily. Head downstairs and the bedroom opens onto the lawn, where the grown-ups' swing hangs at exactly the right angle to catch the evening light. There's an OFYR grill just outside for when the mood takes you, and a kitchenette for everything else.

Casa de Família was built for the beautiful chaos of a family holiday in Portugal. Four bedrooms — one double, three singles — two bathrooms, a sitting room with TV and sound system, and a proper kitchen with an oven. The master bedroom has a spacious dressing room, one of the kids' rooms doubles as a nanny's room or study if needed, and the patio outside becomes the natural headquarters for everything from breakfast to bedtime negotiations.

Casa do Caseiro — the former estate manager's house — has a quiet dignity to it, like it's seen everything and has stories it's not quite telling. Two double bedrooms, two bathrooms, a generous kitchen with all the kit including an ice maker (the detail that earns loyalty in summer), a living room with TV and sound system, and a patio that catches the afternoon sun. Sleeps four adults comfortably, with room for two little ones, and feels like a house that's been properly lived in.

Apartamento Oliveira sits on the upper floor of a two-storey house — south-facing, which means light all day. A kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and balcony, with a double bed, a sofa that converts into two extra beds, and a workstation for anyone who couldn't quite fully disconnect. Downstairs there's a library and beauty studio, which means your neighbours are books and someone giving massages. There are worse situations.

Apartamento Lavanda is the north-facing counterpart — quieter light, cooler in summer, with the same thoughtful layout: studio with kitchenette, balcony, double bed and workstation. A good choice if you run warm or simply prefer your mornings without the sun insisting you wake up. The shared OFYR barbecue area is steps away for evenings when dinner becomes an event.

Quinta da Boavista has been standing since the 15th century — the coat of arms above the gate says so, quietly, to anyone who looks up. For years it slept, slowly being reclaimed by vines and silence, until Ella and Sergey arrived with a vision, a lot of energy, and that fondness for the number twenty. 

What they've built isn't just a boutique rural retreat in the Minho — it's a living estate, working vineyard, kitchen garden, resident chickens and all, run with the kind of infectious passion that makes guests feel less like visitors and more like they've been let in on a secret.
